10 Things to Know | 10th Season: Week of 5.6.2019

Nyquist continues to show the college - and pro - baseball world what we were lucky enough to see for three seasons at Borleske Stadium

We have now entered the month of May and the anticipation for the 10th season of Walla Walla Sweets baseball is reaching a fever pitch. If it’s anything like the nine seasons that have proceeded it, local baseball fans will have much
to look forward to.

It’s been a busy week for former and future Sweets.

  1. Former Sweets pitcher Chris Lincoln registered both a win and a save over the weekend as the University of California Santa Barbara improved to 36-7 after a three-game sweep at Cal State Northridge. He earned his Big West Conference-leading 12th save on Saturday and hit 97 miles per hour on the radar gun during the course of his effort, according to a KCSB Sports Radio tweet.
  2. Michael Peterson pitched a complete-game, seven-hitter Saturday as Walla Walla Community College topped Blue Mountain, 5-2, in the first game of a Northwest Athletic Conference Eastern Region doubleheader in Pendleton. He struck out six and walked two. OPENING DAY TICKETS ON SALE
  3. Bradye Hirai threw six representative innings in the nightcap of that twin bill. He fanned 10 and allowed just two earned runs and five hits. But the Warriors squandered an eighth-inning lead and lost to the Timberwolves, 9-8.
  4. Patrick Caulfield went 3-for-4 with five stolen bases, four runs scored and two runs batted in Friday to help Santa Barbara City College post a 10-4 victory over Glendale in game one of a best-of-3 California Community College
Athletic Association Southern Cal Regional series. The Vaqueros, however, dropped the final two game of the set, 16-2 and 4-3, to finish the season 24-15.
  5. Ben Johnson went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, including a three-run, first-inning home run, in Northwest Nazarene’s 21-4 victory over Central Washington in the first game of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference double dip Friday in
Nampa, Idaho. Future Sweets teammate Parker Price was 2-for-3 with three runs tallied.
  6. 2018 Sweet and former Walla Walla High School star Mitch Lesmeister had four hits on the day in the doubleheader noted above including a home run and a triple for CWU.
  7. Sweets-to-be Jordan Stubbings and Caleb Farmer both hammered triples Thursday as Colorado Mesa clinched the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular-season title with a 9-6 victory over Dixie State in Grand Junction.
Stubbings was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Farmer plowed his way to a 2-for-3 showing with a run and two RBIs. The league championship is the eighth straight for the Mavericks’ program and 26th overall.
  8. Brandon Wagstaff was 5-for-8 on the day with six runs as WWCC split a pair of Eastern Region contests at  Wenatchee Valley on May 1. He went 2-for-3 with three runs in the Warriors’ 16-4 triumph in game one.
  9. Past Sweet Danny Sinatro laid down a sacrifice bunt and walked during an eight-run, fifth-inning rally Sunday as Washington State overwhelmed in-state rival Washington, 13-2, in a Pac-12 Conference game in Pullman.
  10. Another former Sweet, Nick Nyquist, is hitting .346 this spring for Gonzaga and sports a 1.096 OPS (.662 slugging and .434 on-base). Nyquist and Sinatro faced off last night, with the Cougars finding the best of the Zags, 9-5. Check out this great feature on Nick – and how his time in Walla Walla helped him capitalize on opportunities that have come his way this season in Spokane.
  11. An 11th for good measure: Tickets for the pre-season exhibition – just $3 per seat – are on sale now and Opening Day is filling up fast – you won’t want to miss the start to Summer in Walla Walla!
