Cohen, Ellis, Stowe, and Tse Also Recognized

WALLA WALLA, WA – Six Walla Walla Sweets on Thursday earned all-West Coast League honors. With two players each on the WCL’s first team, second team and honorable mention lists, the Sweets tied second most in the league with the Bellingham Bells and Ridgefield Raptors.

Sam Kane and Charles, Rogers III both were named to the first team, Andrew Cohen and Curtis Ellis were named to the second team, and Trevor Stowe and Trevor Tse earned honorable mentions.

Kane, an outfielder from the University of Nevada Reno, also participated in the home run derby competition held in Victoria, British Columbia, this summer.  In 47 games with the Sweets, Kane was a regular in the middle of the lineup, where he hit 11 home runs, tied for first in the league, and drove in 49 runs, second in that category.  He was atop most of the major hitting categories, finishing first in runs scored (49), slugging percentage (.619), sacrifice flies (9), and second in total bases (109), extra base hits (29), and doubles (16).  He finished the season with a .318 batting average and an impressive 1.013 OPS, which tied for second in the WCL.

Rogers III, a rising sophomore pitcher from Cal State Northridge, was also an All-Star and was the starting pitcher for the South team.  He threw one inning, striking out a batter and not allowing a base runner, helping the South win 5-4. For the season, Rogers III was dominant on the mound for the Sweets, posting an incredible 1.76 ERA in 41 innings over 11 appearances, nine of them starts.  He struck out 42 batters against only nine, allowing 27 runs for an astounding 0.88 WHIP, one of the best in the WCL for qualified pitchers.  His most impressive outing was his June 11 appearance in Kelowna, in which he pitched eight innings, allowing one run on seven hits while striking out five to help the Sweets to an 8-1 victory.

Cohen, a soon-to-be sophomore at Grand Canyon University, appeared in 13 games for the Sweets, all in relief, and was one of the main bullpen arms. In 20 1/3 innings, Cohen boasted a 2.66 ERA, striking out 29 with hitters only having a .134 batting average against the hard-throwing right-hander.  He finished the season with a 2-1 record and an impressive 12.84 strikeouts per game.

Ellis, the upperclassman from St. Francis (IN), also an All-Star selection.  On the season, Ellis was a reliable starter, finishing with a 3-2 record on the season in nine appearances, with seven starts. He tossed 42 2/3 innings, compiling an impressive 2.95 ERA and 1.08 WHIP, striking out 31 batters and issuing just four walks, second-fewest among qualified pitchers. Ellis was a consistent innings-eater for the Sweets, going at least five innings in six of his nine appearnces.

Stowe, the soon-to-be Pepperdine Wave, returned to Walla Walla for a second summer stint. Used mostly as a starter, Stowe struck out 33 batters over 37 2/3 innings in 11 appearances, eight of those starts. He ended the summer with a 2-0 record and a 2.87 ERA, helping the Sweets have one of the more reliable starting rotations in the WCL.

Tse, also in his second summer with the Sweets, tied for the league lead getting hit by a pitch with 23 in 43 games. First-team All-WCL selection Kade Crawford of Kamloops also was hit 23 times.

Tse played almost everywhere for the Sweets, including third base 25 times, second base eight times, five outfield appearances, and a start at shortstop. The soon-to-be Colorado Mesa sophomore finished the summer with a .427 OBP, walking 29 times, scoring 42 runs, and driving in 19 runs, along with six stolen bases.

This continues a week of recognition for Walla Walla this summer. Sweets general manager Cody Miller on Monday was recognized as the league’s Executive of the Year. Miller, in his 10th year with the team and seventh as general manager, earned the honor by a vote of the WCL’s board of directors after Walla Walla reached the playoffs for the first time since 2019. It was Miller’s first year as the organization’s director, starting the position in the fall of 2025.

The WCL awards announcements continue next week, with the league MVP and Pitcher of the Year Awards to be unveiled Monday, Aug. 24.  The League’s Top Prospect Award is set to be announced Wednesday, Aug.26.
