Sweets collect 19 hits and score in five straight innings during wild night against Marion

WALLA WALLA, Wash. (June 17, 2026) – There was no shortage of offense Wednesday night at Borleske Stadium.

The Walla Walla Sweets piled up a season-high 19 hits, scored 19 runs and received RBIs from nearly every spot in the lineup, but a historic back-and-forth game ended with a 23-19 loss to the Marion Berries.

The teams combined for 42 runs, setting a West Coast League record for the most runs scored in a single game.

Walla Walla picked up right where it left off after scoring 15 runs in Tuesday’s series opener. Payton Knowles reached and scored in the bottom of the first, coming home on a sacrifice fly from Mateo Rickman to give the Sweets an early lead.

The offense added two more in the second. Isaac Torres and Logan Nakamura both crossed the plate, with Knowles and Trevor Tse each driving in a run to make it 3-0.

After the game was tied in the top of the third, the Sweets quickly went back in front. Royce Hale, Gaines Haussin and Torres all reached before Nakamura worked a bases-loaded walk. Sam Kane followed by bringing home another run, and Torres later stole home as part of a double steal to put Walla Walla ahead 6-4.

The Sweets continued to swing it well in the fourth.

Tse started the inning and scored on an RBI double from Troy Osborne. Hale then drove Osborne home with a triple to center field, continuing his big start in a Sweets uniform. Torres followed with a two-run double, and Nakamura brought him home to stretch the lead to 11-6.

Walla Walla put together its biggest inning of the night in the fifth, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring seven times.

Osborne drove in his second run of the game with an RBI single before Haussin doubled home Rickman. Bo Stinson followed with a two-run double, and Nakamura added an RBI single to make it 16-9.

Kane capped the inning with the loudest swing of the night, launching a two-run home run to give the Sweets an 18-9 lead.

Marion began to chip away late before putting together a 12-run ninth inning to move in front. Even after the momentum shifted, Walla Walla continued to battle in the bottom half.

Hale reached and scored on Nakamura’s third hit of the night, giving the second baseman his fourth RBI and bringing the final score to 23-19.

The Sweets finished with seven extra-base hits and had nine different players drive in at least one run.

Nakamura led the way with three hits and four RBIs, while Kane drove in three and hit his second home run of the summer. Osborne went 3-for-6 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, and Tse added three hits, two runs and an RBI.

Hale continued his strong opening series with two hits, including a triple, three runs scored and an RBI. Haussin and Torres each recorded two hits and scored three times, while Torres drove in two and stole a pair of bases. Stinson also added a two-run double off the bench.

The 19-run performance came one night after Walla Walla scored a previous season-high 15 runs, giving the Sweets 34 runs and 30 hits through the first two games of the series.

The Sweets will return to Borleske Stadium for the rubber match against Marion on Thursday, June 18. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
