Sweets Shutout Knights

CORVALLIS, Ore. — The Sweets continued their dominance over the Knights this season with their most impressive win over the first place team yet, 8-0. It is the first time in franchise history that the Sweets have shut out the Knights at Goss Stadium on the campus of Oregon State.

Walla Walla opened the scoring in the fourth inning. After two quick outs, a single and two walks loaded the bases for the Sweets. JJ Moran brought home the first runs with a two-RBI single scoring Kolby Felix and Joey Winters. Mason Millar followed that up with his first double of the season bringing home another two runs in Logan Meyer and Moran.

The score remained 4-0 until the eighth and ninth innings when the Sweets really started to pull away from the Knights.

In the eighth, Winters brought home Felix with an RBI single. Felix got aboard with a single for himself as well. Both batters ended with multi-hit games, recording five of the eight hits for the Sweets. For Winters it was his fourth multi-hit game of the season and third with the Sweets. Felix got up to three hits, tying a season-high for him.

In the ninth, Walla Walla poured it one with three more runs. An RBI groundout scored Joel Esparza for the first run, and the third hit from Felix brought home the final two runs in David Mysza and Stevie Hom.

On the mound, Rex Solle did not give the Knights much to work with. The freshman committed to UCLA tossed a season-high seven scoreless innings and only gave up three hits and two walks. Solle struck out four batters, including a big strikeout in the third frame to leave two baserunners on and keep the game tied at zero.

Nate Naccarato pitched the final two innings and only allowed one baserunner off a hit by pitch. Outside of that, no hits or walks from Naccarato and one strikeout.

With the win, the Sweets improve to 7-13 in the second half and 16-30 overall. They are four more wins away from matching their win total last season, and five away from improving from 2023. It was the third straight win for the Sweets over the Corvallis Knights dating back to July 13 at Borleske Stadium.

Walla Walla takes a 1-0 lead in the series. They will look to win their third series in a row Tuesday. It would also be their longest winning streak of the season at three consecutive games. First pitch is set for 6:35, and Sweets’ coverage can be found on Mixlr.com.
