Greg Shaw

Bio: Greg Shaw is a Senior Director in Microsoft’s Office of the CEO. He is co-author of Hit Refresh by Satya Nadella (Harper Collins) and Editor & Publisher of The Amazon Way books by John Rossman (Clyde Hill Publishing).

Prior to his second tour at Microsoft, Greg was publisher and CEO of Crosscut.com, an online news and opinion magazine.

Greg served as an executive of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for nearly 9 years. He was the policy and advocacy director for the foundation’s U.S. Program, a role that oversaw public policy, public finance and communications for all domestic initiatives. Greg led the foundation’s Pacific Northwest Program, which focused on improving the lives of low-income families in the region. He created the foundation’s Early Childhood Learning initiative, founded Thrive by Five, and managed the College Readiness portfolio in the State of Washington. He also created the office of Grantee and Partner Engagement.

Prior to joining the foundation, Greg was a partner in the marketing communications firm of Shepardson Stern and Kaminsky (SS+K), where he was an advisor to the foundation and to numerous leading corporate brands. He spent six years as a communications leader at Microsoft, where he helped to create the company’s giving program to provide access to computing and the Internet through public libraries.

Prior to Microsoft, Greg was an executive with Ketchum Communications in Washington, D.C. He has served in the Office of the U.S. Secretary of the Interior and within the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs. He began his career as a writer and editor for numerous newspapers, including the Cherokee Advocate, the newspaper for the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma.

Greg has been appointed to numerous start-up, government and nonprofit boards, and is asked frequently to be a speaker on news, media and publishing.

He has a B.A. in journalism from Northeastern State University in Oklahoma. Greg and his wife have two children.
