Sweets Beat Berries 11-8 in Inaugural Matchup

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — In the inaugural game between the Sweets and the Berries, Walla Walla opened up out of the All-Star break with an 11-8 nail-biting win.

In the first frame, the Sweets got off on the right foot with a pair of runs. Landon Young drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Trevor Tse followed with a single, moving Young to third. Dominic Cadiz walked to load the bases, and Tanner Kern was hit by a pitch to force in Young for the game’s first run.

Owen Estabrook lifted a sacrifice fly to right, bringing home Tse to make it 2-0 Sweets. However, with the bases loaded, the Sweets could not add on heading into the home half.

In the bottom of the frame, the Berries threatened with the bases loaded. However, with one out, Sweets starter Levi Anderson wiggled out of the jam, inducing a couple of weak flyouts, solidifying a 2-0 Sweets lead heading into the second inning.

In the bottom of the second, the Marion Berries got on the board after Nick Holm reached on a single and Cade Goldstein followed it up with a triple to drive in Holm for the team’s first run.

In the fourth inning, Nikhil Beasley went deep for the third time this season for the Sweets, giving Walla Walla a 3-1 lead. However, it was short-lived. In the bottom of the fifth, Jake Allen led off with a solo home run to tie the game, and Cody Kashimoto kept the inning going with a single. Paul Vazquez then doubled to bring home Kashimoto, and Tyler Dunning followed with another double to score Vazquez, giving the Marion Berries a three-run inning and a 4-3 lead.

In the sixth, Billy Scaldeferri got in on the scoring frenzy with a home run to straightaway center. It was his third of the year as the Sweets tied up the Berries at four.

Levi Anderson’s day was done after Paxton Fenberg took over on the mound for the Sweets. Nick Holm led off with a double and Cade Goldstein followed with a double to bring in Holm. Cody Kashimoto then ripped the team’s third consecutive double, scoring Goldstein and snatching the lead right back, 6-4, after six frames.

However, the Sweets threw another punch right back in the top of the seventh. Dominic Cadiz singled to spark the inning, and Tanner Kern followed with a double. Owen Estabrook then singled to bring in Cadiz, and Kern advanced to third. Billy Scaldeferri reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Kern, while Estabrook was forced out at second for the second out. Nikhil Beasley kept the rally going with a single that pushed Scaldeferri to second, and Andrew Demianew singled to drive in Scaldeferri and give the Sweets a 7-4 lead.

In the home half, Tyler Dunning went deep to even the scoring and send the game into the eighth all knotted up.

In the eighth, Trevor Tse singled and advanced to second on a passed ball with one out. With two gone, Tanner Kern kept the inning alive with a double to score Tse. Owen Estabrook then reached on an error by the third baseman, moving Kern to third. Billy Scaldeferri followed with an RBI single, plating Kern, while Estabrook advanced to third. Nikhil Beasley capped the rally with a double that brought home both Estabrook and Scaldeferri, as the Sweets pushed across four runs.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Berries threatened to erase the four-run deficit. Andrew Mhoon singled, and with two gone, Nick Holm followed with a single to drive in Mhoon, cutting the deficit to 11-8. Another pinch-hitter, Peyton Tyner, singled to push Holm to second, and Cade Goldstein drew a walk to load the bases. With the tying run aboard, Cody Kashimoto grounded out unassisted to first to end the game, as the Marion Berries’ late rally fell short. Paxton Fenberg finished his night in long relief, allowing four earned runs in four innings with four strikeouts.
