Sweets Win 15-8 Over the NorthPaws in Series Finale

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — The Walla Walla Sweets won the series against the Kamloops NorthPaws with a 15-8 victory in the series finale.

The Sweets’ offense did not hold back as Walla Walla earned their second straight home win. After falling behind 1-0 early in the bottom of the first, Trevor Tse led off with a single, followed by Troy Sanders with a hit to left. Dominic Cadiz doubled to right field, scoring Tse for his 11th RBI of the season. Billy Scaldeferri kept the rally alive with a single, bringing home Sanders and Cadiz. Owen Estabrook capped the inning with a two-run home run to left-center, scoring Scaldeferri. The Sweets struck out three straight times to end the inning but finished with five runs on five hits and no runners left on base.

In the top of the second, Kamloops responded. Matthew MacDonald drew a walk, and Tanner Hornback singled to third. A wild pitch advanced both runners into scoring position with no outs. Drew Abercrombie doubled to left, scoring MacDonald and Hornback to cut the lead.

The Sweets added to their lead in the bottom of the third. Cadiz doubled to center, and Scaldeferri followed with a double to left, scoring Cadiz. Estabrook singled up the middle, his second hit of the day, scoring Scaldeferri and making it 7-3.

Walla Walla kept the pressure in the fourth. Andrew Demianew walked, and Tse reached on a throwing error, advancing to third in a wild sequence that allowed Demianew to score. After a pitching change, Sanders hit a sacrifice fly to center, bringing in Tse.

Kamloops rallied again in the top of the fifth. Elijah Clayton struck out swinging, but Connor Clark singled to left. Jared Hall walked and then singled to right, scoring Clark and Hall. After a pitching change, MacDonald hit an RBI single to left, narrowing the gap to 9-6.

In the top of the sixth, Kamloops kept attacking. Abercrombie flew out to center, but Clayton doubled to left, followed by Clark’s double that scored Clayton. Clark advanced to third on a groundout. A balk by the pitcher allowed Clark to score. Tamayo later flew out to left, ending the inning with Kamloops adding two more runs.

The Sweets quelled the NorthPaws’ momentum in the bottom half. Johnny Backus singled up the middle with one out, and Nate Stiveson singled to left to put two on. Zane Bidwell walked to load the bases. Demianew reached on a fielder’s choice that led to an error, allowing Backus and Stiveson to score while Bidwell and Demianew advanced. After five innings, Walla Walla led 11-6.

By the bottom of the eighth, the lead was down to three, but the Sweets exploded. Scaldeferri singled to right, and Estabrook was intentionally walked, moving Scaldeferri to third. Backus followed with a walk, scoring Scaldeferri on a wild pitch. Stiveson drew another walk, then scored two more runs on a throwing error. After a pitching change, Bidwell reached on a strikeout and catcher’s error, with Stiveson scoring to complete a four-run inning.

Sweets pitcher Alex Figueroa closed the game with a 1-2-3 top of the ninth as Walla Walla secured the 15-8 win. Tomorrow, the Sweets travel to Yakima to face the Yakima Valley Pippins. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., with coverage beginning 10 minutes earlier on the Walla Walla Sweets Mixlr.
