SALEM, Ore. (August 4, 2026) – Tuesday night’s game at Chemeketa Baseball Field came to an early end as wildfire smoke moved the night from unusual to unsafe.

With air quality becoming too unhealthy to continue, the Walla Walla Sweets and Marion Berries had their game called after five innings, giving Marion a 6-2 win in game two of the series.

The decision was made in real time by the managers and umpires as conditions continued to be monitored throughout the night. The result evened the series at one game apiece after Walla Walla opened the set with a 7-4 win Monday.

Marion scored first with one run in the bottom of the first, but the Sweets answered in the second.

Sam Kane reached to begin the inning, and Royce Hale followed with a single to help put pressure on the defense. Kyler Bittner then put the ball in play, bringing Kane home and tying the game at 1-1.

The Berries moved back in front with four runs in the third and added another in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead.

Walla Walla added one more run in the top of the fourth. Hale singled again and later scored when Jaylen Kennedy lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, cutting the deficit to 6-2.

Hale led the Sweets offensively, going 2-for-3 and scoring once. Bo Stinson also reached twice with a single and a walk, while Kane walked and scored Walla Walla’s first run.

Trevor Tse also reached base in a notable way, getting hit by a pitch to tie the new WCL single-season record with 23 hit-by-pitches. The mark had recently been reset within the league, and Tse now shares the top spot with Kamloops’ Kade Crawford at 23.

On the mound, Carson Waples got the start for Walla Walla and worked three innings, striking out two. Bryce Chambers followed with his first appearance against WCL competition this summer, tossing the fourth inning.

The game was called before the bottom of the fifth inning could begin, ending the night early because of the smoke and giving the Sweets an unusual finish during their final regular season series.

Walla Walla is scheduled to return to Chemeketa Baseball Field on Wednesday, August 5, for the series finale against Marion. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., with air quality continuing to be monitored before the game.
