Leo Rivera Returns to Sweets as Head Coach
Former Whitman, LC State standout served as assistant coach in 2025

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — The Walla Walla Sweets have announced that Leo Rivera will serve as the team’s head coach for the 2026 summer season.
A former Sweets infielder and Whitman College standout, Rivera brings a player-first, development-driven mindset back to Borleske Stadium as he takes the helm for the upcoming summer.
“It’s something I’ve wanted since my playing days,” Rivera said. “It’s a blessing, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity.”
A Seattle native, Rivera played collegiate baseball at Whitman College and Lewis-Clark State College, handling all four infield positions throughout his career. He previously suited up for the Sweets as a player and later joined the organization as an assistant coach. Rivera most recently served as a volunteer assistant coach at Seattle University, continuing to build his coaching résumé at the collegiate level.
“Borleske is one of the best stadiums in the region,” he said. “The new clubhouse is a game-changer, and as a baseball guy, I love the all-natural field.”
As he steps into his first season as head coach, Rivera’s focus centers on establishing a strong, developmental environment.
“First and foremost, I want to establish a winning culture,” Rivera said. “We’re here to get better. Every day whether you’re playing or not, you’re here to get better. Summer ball is a huge resource and if you treat it the right way, you can really build something for the players and the fans.”

Rivera also emphasized teamwork and player growth.
“I want guys to talk to each other,” he said. “Exchange contact info, hang out, and get comfortable fast. The quicker they build that connection, the better they can be as a team. Communication leads to trust, and teams that clique the best, play the best.”
His message to players reflects a grounded, growth-minded approach to the game.
“The goal should be to maximize players’ baseball potential,” Rivera said. “Treat every day like it’s an opportunity. Nothing is guaranteed, but if you can go about it with a sense of workmanship, you can be at peace.”
When asked about the staff around him, Rivera said it’s about finding the right people to build a lasting foundation.
“I want to try to surround myself with people who are on the same page,” he said. “who also want to build something that’s gonna last. People that wanna work, be there every day.”
Rivera’s message to fans is simple:
“Come to the field. Come to the games,” he said. “The better the experience, the better the product.”
Sweets general manager Cody Miller expressed his enthusiasm for Rivera’s hiring.
“I’m excited to have Leo as the next manager of our ball-club,” Miller said. “His passion for the Sweets and Walla Walla has our team excited for the upcoming season. I can’t wait for him to get started for our 2026 summer season.”
