Sweets Lose 18-3 Against Raptors, Playoff Hopes Still Alive

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — The Sweets lost the series opener 18-3 against the Ridgefield Raptors.

Out of the gate, the Raptors pounced on the Sweets in the bottom of the first. Taylor Takata led off with a single, and after a walk to Cooper Whitton, Andrew Estrella singled home Takata for the game’s first run. Dawson Downs then doubled, plating Whitton to make it 2-0, while Estrella advanced to third.

After another walk to Jovan Camacho, Ryan Camacho drew a bases-loaded walk to score Estrella. A wild pitch then brought in Downs and advanced the runners. Dylan Osborne reached on an error by the shortstop, scoring Jovan Camacho and pushing Ryan Camacho to third.

Later, with two outs, Whitton singled to bring home Ryan Camacho and Osborne, stretching the lead to 7-0 and knocking out Sweets starter Levi Anderson. Alex Figueroa entered the game for Walla Walla in long relief and recorded the last out of a turbulent first frame.

Figueroa calmed the water for the next three frames, but in the fifth with the score still 7-0, the Raptors added on. With two on, Estrella singled to score Takata, then Downs walked to load the bases.

Jovan Camacho followed with an RBI single, and his brother Ryan Camacho reached on an error, plating another run. Osborne added an RBI single to bring in Downs, and Ervin Dorsett singled to bring home Jovan Camacho.

Jake Lockwood followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Ryan Camacho and stretching the Raptors’ lead to 13-0.

In the seventh inning, with the Sweets still trailing 13-0, the Raptors tacked on five more runs, including a 109 mph exit velocity grand slam from Whitton.

The Sweets added a trio of runs in the top of the ninth, but it was too little, too late as Walla Walla fell 18-3 for their eighth straight loss.

The Sweets’ playoff chances are still alive after tonight’s loss. Walla Walla must win out over their final five games and rely on the Elks getting swept against the Black Bears in a three-game series starting Monday.

The Sweets take on the Raptors in game two tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. Fans can catch the broadcast on the Walla Walla Sweets Mixlr channel starting at 6:20.
