Sweets Lose Series Opener 11-2 Against Knights

WALLA WALLA, Washington – The Sweets lost the series opener against the Corvallis Knights 11-2 to start a six game road trip.

After a scoreless top of the first, the Knights struck quickly in the bottom half. Blake Wilson singled, Brock Ketelsen reached on an error and Thomas Ferroggiaro walked to load the bases. Trey Swygart followed with a two-run single, and Maddox Riske grounded out to bring home Ferroggiaro, giving Corvallis a 3-0 lead.

In the second, the Knights kept the pressure on. Xavier Rios reached on an error and Kellen Segel was hit by a pitch. Wilson singled to load the bases, and Ketelsen singled to bring in two more runs, helped by an error at second. After a groundout moved the runners up, Swygart grounded out to score Wilson. A balk then allowed Ketelsen to come home, stretching the lead to 7-0.

Corvallis tacked on another run in the third when Cole Katayama-Stall walked, advanced on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch.

Sweets starter Alex Jennings finished with four innings pitched, allowing three earned runs with one strikeout and four walks. Meanwhile, Knights starter Tyler Bellerose worked three shutout innings.

The score stayed 8-0 until the bottom of the seventh. Katayama-Stall walked and scored on a fielder’s choice, and Ferroggiaro ripped a triple to drive in Ketelsen and Segel, pushing the lead to 11-0.

The Sweets finally got on the board in the eighth. Gunner Geile and Nikhil Beasley singled, and after a fielder’s choice and a strikeout, Isaiah Chacon singled to drive in Geile. Jacob Talbott followed with another single to score Chris Tsouras, though Chacon was thrown out at home to end the inning.

Corvallis held on from there to win 11-2 and take the first game of the series. The teams meet again tomorrow with first pitch at 6:35 p.m. Fans can catch the broadcast on the Walla Walla Sweets Mixlr channel starting at 6:15.
