Sweets lose 12-10 Against Berries, Comeback Bid Falls Short

WALLA WALLA, Washington – The Sweets nearly climbed all the way back from a double-digit deficit but fell short in a 12-10 loss to the Marion Berries.

The Berries got on the board in the top of the first. Cade Goldstein singled, and after a walk to Danny Wideman and a flyout by Bryce Hubbard, Paul Vazquez singled to load the bases. Tyler Dunning followed with a sacrifice fly to right to bring home Goldstein, but Sweets starter Sam Nicholson limited the damage to one run.

In the second inning, the Berries broke the game open. Breckin Hadley and Anthony Cepeda walked, and Peyton Tyner singled to load the bases. Goldstein was hit by a pitch to force in a run, and Wideman followed with a two-run double to center. After a strikeout and a walk, Dunning singled to drive in two more. Andrew Mhoon was then hit by a pitch to reload the bases.

A pitching change brought in Paxton Fenberg, but Hadley grounded out to first, scoring another run. Cepeda then capped the huge inning with a three-run homer to left, giving the Berries a 10-0 lead.

The Sweets started to chip away in the bottom of the second. Dominic Cadiz walked, Isaiah Chacon singled, and Nate Stiveson walked to load the bases. After back-to-back strikeouts, Andrew Demianew reached on a throwing error by the pitcher, allowing Cadiz to score an unearned run.

Walla Walla kept the pressure on in the third. Esteban Olazaba singled, and Billy Scaldeferri walked. Cadiz reached on an error to load the bases, and Chacon drew a walk to force in a run. Stiveson added a sacrifice fly, and Tsouras singled to bring in another, cutting the deficit to 10-4 but leaving the bases loaded for the second straight frame.

In the fourth, Olazaba singled again, and Cadiz blasted his ninth homer of the season over the left-field fence to make it 10-6.

The Berries tacked on two more runs in the seventh to extend their lead to 12-6, but the Sweets kept fighting. Gunner Geile ripped a two-run double to cut it to 12-8. With the bases loaded, Cadiz and Chacon were each hit by pitches, bringing the score to 12-10.

In the eighth, the Sweets went quietly, but in the ninth they brought the tying run to the plate. Cadiz drove a ball just foul down the left-field line and later fouled out to Peyton Tyner, who turned it into a game-ending double play.

The Sweets get an off day tomorrow before starting a stretch of nine straight games to close the season. Walla Walla returns to action Tuesday against the Corvallis Knights, with first pitch at 6:35 p.m. Fans can catch the broadcast on the Walla Walla Sweets Mixlr channel starting at 6:15.
