Sweets Drop Series Opener Against Berries 9-1, Playoff Race Tightens

WALLA WALLA, Washington – The Sweets lost the series opener against the Berries 9-1 and are now just a half game up on the second wild card position.

Out of the gate, the Berries struck first with an opening run in the top of the first inning. Cade Goldstein reached on an error and later came around to score when Bryce Hubbard drove him in with a single.

In the second inning, the Sweets wasted no time responding. Trevor Tse opened the home half with a double into right-center field to get into scoring position. A pair of Sweets outfielders, Andrew Demianew and Tristan Schaefer, extended the frame with singles to bring home Tse and even the score at 1-1 after two innings.

But in the third inning, the game began to slip away from the Sweets. After starter Levi Andersin recorded back-to-back strikeouts to open the frame, the Berries put together a two-out rally. Danny Wideman, playing in his first game of the season against Walla Walla, singled to keep the inning alive. Hubbard followed with a walk to put two on, and Paul Vasquez delivered a base hit to score a pair of runs. After Tyler Dunning walked, Andrew Mhoon broke the game open with a three-run homer to give the Berries a 6-1 lead.

In the fifth inning, the Berries kept the pressure on. After a leadoff walk, Mhoon continued to wreak havoc with a double to drive in a run. Will Stickney then singled to bring home another and later came around to score himself when Goldstein added a knock, putting the Berries up 9-1.

There was no further scoring the rest of the way, but there was still one more highlight before it was over. Sweets catcher Owen Estabrook stepped onto the mound in the ninth inning to pitch for the first time in his career. He didn’t give up a run, allowing just one base hit.

The Sweets will look to even the series tomorrow, with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m. Walla Walla is just a half-game ahead of the Berries for the final wild card spot, having held a wild card position all season. Fans can tune in to the broadcast starting at 6:15 p.m. on the Walla Walla Sweets YouTube channel.
