Sweets Drop Series Finale 12-7 Against Elks

WALLA WALLA, Washington – The Sweets lost the last game of the series against the Elks 12-7 despite 14 base hits and four Elks errors.

In the bottom of the first inning the Sweets scored first. ​​Gunner Geile walked, stole second, and advanced to third on a groundout by Esteban Olazaba. Billy Scaldeferri then singled to left, bringing Geile home for the Sweets’ first run. The Sweets later loaded the bases but could not add on. 

In the bottom of the second Chris Tsouras grounded out to first to start the inning. Tristan Schaefer followed with a single to center and then stole second. Gunner Geile singled to right, advancing to second on the throw as Schaefer came all the way around to score on an error by the right fielder. The Sweets then put two in scoring position but once again could not come through with just the sole run and a 2-0 lead. 

In the third inning Sweets starting pitcher Issac Hallam worked through the Elks lineup without allowing a base runner and turned the ball to the Sweets offense which plated yet another run. Nikhil Beasley singled to right and stole second. Isaiah Chacon then walked to put two on. Nate Stiveson followed with a double to center, driving in Beasley and moving Chacon to third as the Sweets added another run. However with two on and no outs the Sweets could not plate another run.

In the fourth inning the Elks offense finally sparked. Jack Laffitte singled to center, and Jace Miller followed with a single to left. Makoa Sniffen then blasted a three-run homer to left, clearing the bases. Ryan VandenBrink added a single and Brodey Bitove singled to left, scoring VandenBrink and taking the 4-3 lead. 

In the fifth the Elks added on. With two on base Makoa Sniffen came back up and did the exact same thing, a three run homerun out to left field for his second of the night. Sniffen came into the game with just three homers and had two tonight as the Elks led 7-3.

In the home half Nate Stiveson got in on the homerun party with a bomb out to left field. It was his first homerun of the season in West Coast League Play as the Sweets trailed 7-4.

In the sixth WAlla Walla added another one. Gunner Geile led off with a single to center, and Esteban Olazaba followed with a single to right, however Geile was then thrown out trying to advance to third. Billy Scaldeferri singled to left, putting two on. Dominic Cadiz reached on an error by the shortstop, allowing Olazaba to score but the inning shortly after came to a close with the Sweets trailing 7-5.

In the seventh inning the Elks continued to pile it on. Benji Solano singled and Jace Miller walked to put two on. Makoa Sniffen then doubled to left, driving in Solano and sending Miller to third. Matt Dobson followed with a single to center, bringing home both Miller and Sniffen. 

After the stretch trailing 10-5 the Sweets inched closer. Nate Stiveson led off with a double to left, and Chris Tsouras reached on an error by the shortstop, moving Stiveson to third. Stiveson finished with three extra base hits and four total knocks. Tristan Schaefer grounded out to first, advancing Tsouras to second.

Gunner Geile then grounded out to second, allowing Stiveson to score unearned before the inning ended. 

In the eighth the Elks notched one across but so did the Sweets. In the bottom of the frame with the bases loaded Chris Tsouras singled for his first base hit with the Sweets scoring one run. However with the bases loaded the Sweets could not come through to add on trailing 11-7.

In the ninth inning the Elks tacked on one more as the Sweets went down in the bottom of the ninth without a run despite bringing yet another runner in scoring position. The Sweets ended with a season high 14 runners left on in scoring position as the Elks salvaged the series 12-7.   

Walla Walla is now one and a half games up on the berries for the second wild card spot in the south and a half game back on the Elks for the first wild card.
