Sweets Lose 6-5 Against Berries to Even Up the Series

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — The Sweets loaded the bases in the ninth but could not scrape across the tying run in a nailbiting 6-5 loss against the Berries.

In the first frame, the Sweets started off the same way they did yesterday, with a pair of runs. Cole Rogers singled to open the game and stole second for his team leading 13th stolen bag on the season. Dom Cadiz then followed up with a moonshot homerun out to left field for his eighth on the year. The Sweets left the top of the first up 2-0.

In the second Trevor Tse singled and was later ruled out as Tristan Schaefer reached on a fielder’s choice. Then on a pickoff attempt to first Schaefer went from first to home to give the Sweets a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, the Marion Berries cut into the Sweets’ early lead. Cade Goldstein led off with a double after working the count full, then advanced to third on a groundout by Cody Kashimoto. Bryce Hubbard followed with a single to bring Goldstein home for the Berries’ first run of the night.

In the fourth the Berries evened the score. Tyler Dunning opened the frame by drawing a walk, Nick Holm then reached on an error allowing Dunning to move all the way to third. Andrew Mhoon followed with a double that scored Dunning and pushed Holm to third. Cade Goldstein then grounded out unassisted to first, but not before Holm came home to score an unearned run, tying up the game at 3-3.

In the top of the sixth, the Sweets rallied to retake the lead with a pair of runs. Nate Stiveson worked a walk and moved up to third on a single by Andrew Demianew. Trevor Tse then delivered a single of his own, scoring Stiveson and advancing Demianew to second. Tristan Schaefer followed with a fielder’s choice and reached second on an error allowing Demianew to come home with an unearned run.

With the Sweets up 5-3 the Berries responded. Nick Holm singled, but was forced out at second when Andrew Mhoon reached on a fielder’s choice for the second out. Cade Goldstein then doubled to drive in Mhoon. A passed ball moved Goldstein to third, and Cody Kashimoto worked a walk before singling to bring in Goldstein. Bryce Hubbard added a single to move Kashimoto to second, and Paul Vazquez followed with another single to plate Kashimoto and give the Berries a 6-5 lead.

In the ninth the Sweets rallied with two outs but could not finish the job with the bases loaded as Andrew Demianew swung out to end the game. The Berries even the series at one a piece with a rubber match tomorrow night.
