Sweets Beat the Berries 5-4 to Take Series

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — The Sweets hung onto a narrow 5-4 lead in the ninth inning as the Berries left a runner on third to cap off an epic back and forth series.

In yesterday’s ballgame Walla Walla had the bases loaded with two outs in the ninth inning down by a run and could not come through with the big hit. In today’s ballgame the Berries were put in a similar situation and responded similarly.

In the first inning the Sweets used some timely two out hitting to break open the scoring. Billy Scaldeferri reached on a hit by pitch and later stole second to put a runner in scoring position. Nikhil Beasley then came through with a big hit to send home Scaldeferri and put the Sweets on top 1-0.

However in the home half the Berries came back with vengeance. Cade Goldstein led off with a double and moved to third on a fly out by Andrew Mhoon. Goldstein then scored on a passed ball for the Berries’ first run. Bryce Hubbard then drew a walk, and after another walk to Paul Vazquez, Tyler Dunning kept the inning alive with a single that scored Hubbard. Breckin Hadley followed with another single to bring home Vazquez subsequently giving Marion an early 3-1 lead.

Sweets pitcher Nakoa Moses-Gomera took over for opening pitcher Jacob Talbott in the second inning and spun a gem. The Walla Walla Community college player took care of the next five innings not allowing a run with four strikeouts and just one walk.

In the top of the sixth frame the Sweets offense finally sparked. With two down and noone on, Nate Stiveson worked a walk and advanced to second when Andrew Demianew reached on an error by the first baseman. After a pitching change brought in Jack Meek, Hunter Komine delivered a single that scored Stiveson. An error by the center fielder on the same play allowed Demianew to come home as well as the Sweets evened up the score at 3-3.

In the top of the seventh the Sweets broke the tie. Jacob Talbott led off with a walk and promptly stole second. After Billy Scaldeferri struck out swinging, Nikhil Beasley singled to move Talbott over to third. Owen Estabrook then followed with another single, driving in Talbott to give the Sweets a narrow 4-3 lead.

However the edge did not last past the eighth inning. Ben Allen led off with a fly out to center before Nick Holm worked a walk. Peyton Tyner then singled to move Holm to second, prompting a pitching change as Alex Figueroa replaced Aidan Cube. Cade Goldstein was hit by a pitch to load the bases but was thrown out at the plate the very next at bat as Andrew Mhoon reached on a fielder’s choice. Bryce Hubbard was then also hit by a pitch, forcing in Tyner and evening up the score.

In the ninth inning the Sweets fought right back. With two outs Trevor Tse led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Nate Stiveson then reached on an error, which also allowed Tse to come around and score an unearned run. Entering the bottom of the ninth Walla Walla held a narrow 5-4 lead.

In the bottom of the frame Will Stickney led off the inning after being hit by a pitch and advanced to second when Tyler Dunning grounded out back to Figueroa who made a tough barehanded play. Ben Allen then also grounded out, moving Stickney to third. With two outs, Jake Allen grounded out to second to end the game, stranding Stickney at third as the Sweets secured the win.

The Sweets have an off day tomorrow before coming back home to take on the Elks. First pitch is Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. You can find the Video broadcast on the Walla Walla Sweets Youtube starting at 6:15
