Sweets Lose 13-2 Against the Knight and Fall to .500 Heading Into the Break

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — The Sweets were swept by the knights in a 13-2 series finale, falling to .500 on the season.

In the first frame the Sweets held the Knights to a zero on the scoreboard for the first time in the three game set. However in the second the Knights made up for lost time. After a pair of walks Trey Swygart punched an RBI single to second to open the scoring. Ian Fernandez followed with a single of his own to drive in another, and the inning snowballed from there.

Corvallis would tack on more with a bases-loaded walk to Blake Wilson and a two-run double off the bat of Brock Ketelsen. Thomas Ferroggiaro added a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Wilson, and after a stolen base from Ketelsen, Maddox Riske capped the inning with an RBI single. By the time the dust settled, the Knights had sent 12 men to the plate and scored seven runs to take firm control. Sweets starting pitcher Peysen Sweeney allowed five walks.

That was the only blowup inning for Sweeney as he finished through four allowing four runs, all induced in the second frame.

In the fifth Trey Swygart tripled and later came home to score to give the Knights an 8-0 lead. In all three games Corvallis managed to punch through a triple.

In the bottom of the frame the Sweets finally managed to scrape a couple of runs across. Sweets first baseman Nikhil Beasley got a hold of one out to left field for his second homerun of the season and put the Sweets on the board with a solo shot. Trevor Tse then battled through a tough at-bat to reach on an infield single, and Nate Stiveson followed with a single to center, moving Tse over to third.

Hunter Komine lifted a fly ball to center for the first out, but Jacob Talbott brought in a run, breaking up a potential double play as Tse crossed the plate. However, with a couple on the inning ended when Demianew struck out swinging on a close check swing call. At the end of five the Sweets trailed 8-2.

In the sixth inning Blake Wilson went deep for a solo home run and later in the eighth led off the frame with another solo shot for his second of the day. Wilson came into the day with just one long ball.

The Knights followed up the inning with three more runs on a couple of walks and two base hits. Heading into the ninth the Sweets trailed 13-2.

The scoreline stayed the same in the ninth and the Sweets fell for the fifth time in six games 13-2. A silver lining to the cold streak is that the Marion Berries picked up just one game on the Sweets over the last week as Walla Walla enters the all star break a half game up on the final wild card spot.

The Sweets next take on the Berris down in Salem. Game one is this Friday with a 6:35 PM first pitch. You can find the radio broadcast on the Walla Walla Sweets Mixlr starting at 6:15.
