Sweets lose 9-7 Against Knights Despite Late Surge

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — A late rally was not enough for the Walla Walla Sweets as the Corvallis Knights held on to a 9-7 victory.

The Sweets dug themselves an early hole from the jump.  Blake Wilson led off with a bunt single and Brock Ketelsen followed with a base hit to center, moving Wilson into scoring position. Thomas Ferroggiaro added an infield single, and a throwing error on the play allowed Ketelsen to advance to third and Wilson to score the game’s first run. Antonio Castro added to the tally with a sacrifice fly to center, bringing Ketelsen home to make it 2-0. Starting pitcher Tre Morse weasled out of the jam but got back into trouble in the second inning.

Ian Fernandez struck out to start the frame, but Gavin Brubaker ripped a double down the left field line to put a runner in scoring position. Blake Wilson followed with a sharp triple to right, driving in Brubaker to make it 3-0. After a strikeout by Brock Ketelsen for the second out, Thomas Ferroggiaro kept the inning alive with another triple to right, plating Wilson for Corvallis’ fourth run of the night as the Sweets trailed 4-0.

In the fourth inning the Sweets still failed to find the scoreboard. On the other end Ian Fernandez notched his second homer of the year and put the Knights on top 5-0.

From there the Knights avalanche just continued. Corvallis added another run in the fifth despite not notching a hit. Thomas Ferroggiaro drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on an error that allowed Antonio Castro to reach safely. After a flyout to center by Cole Katayama-Stall, Braeden Mondeau lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing Ferroggiaro home to extend the Knights’ lead to 6-0.

In the top of the seventh the Knights continued to add on. Brock Ketelsen led off with a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a balk before Thomas Ferroggiaro also walked. Antonio Castro followed with a single to right, scoring Ketelsen and moving Ferroggiaro to third. After Ferroggiaro was caught stealing between third and home, Cole Katayama-Stall lifted a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Castro, adding another tally for the Knights. The inning didn’t stop there as Braeden Mondeau doubled to center, followed by Maverek Russell doubling to right to score Mondeau and extend the Corvallis lead to 9-0.

However, momentum then shifted. After Nate Stiveson struck out to open the frame, Troy Sanders singled to right and Hunter Komine drew a walk. Andrew Demianew went down swinging for the second out, but Billy Scaldeferri kept the inning alive with a clutch double to center, scoring both Sanders and Komine. Landon Young followed with an infield single to short, moving Scaldeferri to third, and a wild pitch during Tanner Kern’s at-bat allowed Young to take second. Kern then walked to load the bases.

Dominic Cadiz came through with a single to center, scoring Scaldeferri and Young to bring Walla Walla within striking distance. Owen Estabrook followed with a walk to reload the bases before Stiveson doubled to center on his second trip to the plate in the inning, driving in Kern and Cadiz. Sanders then singled again to plate Estabrook, capping a relentless seven-run rally for the Sweets before Komine struck out looking to end the inning, leaving runners at the corners but pulling Walla Walla back into the game.

However from there the magic ended for the Sweets. Walla Walla had two on in the eighth but could not capitalize and ultimately lost 9-7.

Tomorrow first pitch is scheduled for 4:35 PM. The video broadcast can be found on the Walla Walla Sweets youtube channel at 4:15.
