Sweets Win Series Opener 4-2 Over Pippins on July 4th

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — On the 4th of July the Sweets won the series opener against the Pippins 4-2 to snap a four game losing streak.

From the get go there were signs of a low scoring affair between the two sides. After two innings the two sides were level at zero. In the first inning the Sweets did have two on in scoring position with no outs but could not scrape across the first run of the game.

In the third inning the Sweets were the first to get on the board. Designated hitter Dom Cadiz stepped up and went deep to left field for his seventh homer of the season. The UCLA commit is first on the Sweets in long balls and leads the entire West Coast League with a .409 batting average.

In the fifth frame the Pippins finally got on the board. Cole Hansen reached on an error to open the frame. Neil Jansen laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Hansen to second, and Jack Varney followed with a flyout to center for the second out. Langan Naylor then singled to right, scoring Hansen with an unearned run. Naylor stole second, then swiped third on the next at-bat as Dillon Anderson worked a walk, but the Pippins stranded both runners when Gage Reeser flew out to left to end the inning.

Sweets starting pitcher Tre Morse ended his night through five innings allowing zero earned runs and giving up just one base hit with five strikeouts. Morse now leads all Sweets pitchers with 23 strikeouts on the season.

Yakima Valley added another run in the sixth, aided by more defensive miscues. Ethan Buckley reached on an error to start the inning, and Julian Angulo followed with a single to left. After a fielder’s choice put runners on the corners with one out, Cole Hansen lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Buckley with an unearned run. The inning ended moments later when Kyler Bittner was caught stealing second but the Pippins led 2-1.

However the Sweets would not let it last long in the home half. Tanner Kern led off with a single to right, and Landon Young followed with a double to the same spot, putting runners on second and third with no outs. After a strikeout, Billy Scaldeferri singled to right to drive in Kern and move Young to third. Zane Bidwell kept the inning rolling with a single up the middle, plating both Young and Scaldeferri and giving the Sweets a 4-2 lead.

In the top of the seventh the Pippins worked the bases loaded but Nakoa Moses-Gomera was cool, calm, and collected on the hill. A strikeout to end the inning got the Sweets out of the jam as Manager Colby Watilo handed the ball off to Dylan Torres for the eighth inning.

In the eighth Torres worked himself into a jam. With two runners in scoring position and one out Torres spun a strikeout and a weak flyout to end the threat.

In the ninth inning the score still at 4-2 Torres slammed the door and closed out the game. Fireworks followed the game as the Sweets broke a four game losing streak and kept the Battle of the Basin alive.

Walla Walla returns to action tomorrow against the Yakima Valley Pippins. First pitch is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. Saturday, with coverage beginning at 5:15 on the Walla Walla Sweets YouTube channel.
