Sweets Sweep Nighthawks With Dominate 17-0 Win

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — The Walla Walla Sweets swept the Northwest Star Nighthawks with a 10-0 victory in a non-West Coast League matchup.

The Sweets came out firing in the opening frame, sending 14 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs.

Gunner Geile led off with a walk and promptly stole second. Nate Stiveson followed with a walk of his own, and Landon Young singled to right to load the bases. Billy Scaldeferri reached on an error by the left fielder, allowing Geile to score the game’s first run. Owen Estabrook then reached on another error in left, scoring Stiveson.

Tanner Kern drew a walk to load the bases once more, and Zane Bidwell was hit by a pitch to force home another run. After Johnny Backus struck out for the first out of the inning, Jacob Talbot singled to center, plating Estabrook.

Geile struck out swinging for the second out, but the rally kept rolling as Stiveson walked again to drive in Kern. Young singled to right for his second hit of the inning, scoring Bidwell. Scaldeferri followed with an RBI single to left, plating Talbott. Estabrook capped the scoring by drawing a bases-loaded walk to bring home Stiveson. At the end of that encylopedia-like inning the Sweets led 9-0.

In the bottom of the second despite having two outs the Sweets rallied., Jacob Talbot kept the inning alive with a double to left. Gunner Geile and Nate Stiveson followed with back-to-back walks to load the bases, prompting a pitching change as Zach Dinublio replaced Emerson Dennis.

Landon Young then reached on an error by the right fielder, allowing Talbot and Geile to score. Billy Scaldeferri singled to center to drive in Stiveson, and Owen Estabrook reached on an error by the second baseman, bringing home Young. Going into the third the Sweets were up 13-0.

In the third it was much of the same, domination. Zane Bidwell was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and Johnny Backus followed with a single to right. Jacob Talbot was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Gunner Geile grounded into a fielder’s choice, scoring Bidwell, with Talbot out at second.

Nate Stiveson singled to right, driving in Backus. After Landon Young worked a walk to load the bases again, Billy Scaldeferri lifted a sacrifice fly to left, bringing home Geile.

Owen Estabrook capped the scoring with a double to center, scoring Stiveson and moving Young to third. After three inning the Sweets led 17-0.

Defensively the Sweets were dominant as well. Peysen Sweeny started for the Sweets and threw four hitless innings, striking out five and walking one. Jared Glenn pitched a perfect fifth inning with three strikeouts. Alex Figueroa worked a clean sixth, and Lucas Dixon closed out the seventh with a perfect frame and one strikeout. In total, Walla Walla pitchers combined for seven hitless innings with nine strikeouts and one walk.

The game ended after a non WCL run rule with the Sweets taking home the victory 17-0 after seven innings.

The Sweets have an off day tomorrow before travelling for a three game series against the Bend Elks before coming home for a three game series against the Pippins starting on July 4th with fireworks!
