Sweets Offensive Outburst Fuels 19-7 Win Over Pippins

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — The Walla Walla Sweets salvaged the series with an offensive explosion in a 19-7 win over the Yakima Valley Pippins.

The Sweets fell in Saturday’s game 4-2 to drop behind 2-0 in the series for the second straight time against the Pippins. But Sunday’s contest was a completely different story.

After two quiet innings, the Sweets broke through in the top of the third. Zane Bidwell reached on an error, Cole Rogers was hit by a pitch, and Trevor Tse singled to load the bases. Landon Young then doubled to bring home Bidwell and Rogers. Dominic Cadiz followed with a double of his own to score Tse and Young. After a flyout, Jacob Talbot singled to move Cadiz to third and later stole second. Nate Stiveson worked a walk to load the bases, and Andrew Demianew reached on a fielder’s choice to bring home Cadiz. Bidwell, batting for the second time in the inning, doubled to plate Talbot and Demianew. Rogers capped the eight-run inning with a single to score Bidwell.

On the mound, Alex Jennings was excellent early, facing just one over the minimum through three innings and finishing his day with five innings pitched, seven strikeouts, and two runs allowed.

In the fourth, the Sweets added on without a hit. Young walked, advanced on a passed ball and a stolen base, and came in to score on an error, extending the lead to 9-0.

Yakima Valley finally got on the board in the home half of the fourth. Dillon Anderson doubled and came home on a double by Kyler Bittner, while Gage Reeser added an RBI single to make it 9-2.

The Pippins kept chipping away in the sixth with a three-run inning as the first four batters reached base. Dawson Mooney allowed all three to score but managed to escape the frame without further damage.

In the top of the seventh, the Sweets put the game away. Scaldeferri opened with a walk and later scored on a hit-by-pitch. Bidwell delivered a two-run double, Young drew a bases-loaded walk, and Cadiz cleared the bases with another double. Demianew singled to score Cadiz, and Bidwell walked with the bases loaded to bring home another run. In total, Walla Walla put up nine runs in the inning.

Yakima Valley added two in the ninth, but it was far too late as the Sweets cruised to a 19-7 win. Walla Walla gets a day off Monday before returning to Borleske on Tuesday for a three-game set against the Portland Pickles, who still hold just one loss this season, to the Sweets.
