Sweets Walk it off in Extra Innings 6-5 Over Black Bears
WALLA WALLA, Wash. — The Sweets walk it off with a 6-5 win over the Black Bears in the series opener.

In the 10th inning, with second baseman Trevor Tse in scoring position, third baseman Billy Scaldeferri sent the fans home happy with a walk-off line drive to end the game.
To start the game, Sweets starting pitcher Tre Morse was working with pace and efficiency. Through four innings, Morse did not allow a single hit and kept the Black Bears off the scoreboard. Morse finished his day with six strikeouts and just one earned run.
Offensively, the Sweets struck first in the bottom of the second inning. To lead off the frame, third baseman Billy Scaldeferri sent one high into the air out towards left field. With the wind blowing out towards left, the ball kept sailing and eventually cleared the fence for a solo home run to give the Sweets a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Walla Walla kept the pedal to the metal. Catcher Nikhil Beasley started off the inning with a base hit single. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, center fielder Cole Rogers brought around Beasley with a single to double up the lead 2-0.
However, in the top of the fifth the Black Bears’ offense came alive. Will Jesske drew a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error to start things off. Josh Hanson followed with a walk to put runners on the corners, and Matthew Henning came through with a single to right, scoring Jesske to cut into the lead. Tyler Nelson kept the rally alive with a single to left, moving Henning to third and bringing home Hanson. A wild pitch during the next at-bat allowed Henning to score and gave Cowlitz a 3-2 lead.
However, it was short-lived. After Andrew Demianew drew a walk and Cole Rogers reached on a walk, Tse made the Black Bears pay. On a pitch down the middle, Tse crushed a ball to left field and gave the Sweets a 5-3 lead with a three-run home run. It was his second homer of the year.
Cowlitz scraped one across in the top of the sixth but still trailed by a run. In the top of the ninth, with Kolby Solomon on the mound, the Black Bears put together a rally. With a runner on third, Tyler Nelson singled to level the score. Solomon worked out of the inning to keep the two teams tied, but the damage was already done heading into the bottom of the ninth.
A scoreless bottom of the ninth and top of the 10th set up a Walla Walla walk-off chance in the home half of the 10th. Tse opened the frame with a walk, and Tanner Kern kept the line moving with a huge sacrifice bunt to advance Tse into scoring position. Then, with one out, Scaldeferri roped one into left field. As Tse rounded the bag, third base coach Leo Rivera gave him the go sign. In a bang-bang play at the plate, Tse dove in just in front of the throw to win the game 6-5.
The Sweets have now won back-to-back games and remain a perfect 4-0 at home. Walla Walla looks to win its fifth straight at home Saturday night against the Black Bears. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. The video broadcast will be available on the Walla Walla Sweets YouTube channel and the radio call on Mixlr.
