Sweets Lose Second Straight in 9-4 Loss to Pickles

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Sweets lose their second straight game despite out-hitting the Pickles 11-8.

The Sweets went on their second multi-game slide of the year in a five-run loss to the Pickles, but it definitely was not without trying. The Sweets did not commit an error and tallied three more hits than the Pickles, but ultimately it was timely hitting that made all the difference on a brisk evening in Portland.

In the top of the first inning the Sweets got the offense going right out of the gate. First-time designated hitter Landon Young laced a double with one out, and third baseman Dominic Cadiz kept the offense rolling with a single through the infield gap in left to put the Sweets on the board 1-0.

In the bottom of the first the Pickles did not wait long to strike back. Despite not mustering a single base hit, Portland grabbed its first run of the game on a groundout to third. Then with two outs and two on, Josh Schleichardt came to the plate and took Sweets starting pitcher Nakoa Moses-Gomera deep with a two-run home run out to left field. After the first inning the Sweets trailed 3-1.

In the second the Sweets picked up right where they left off. A couple of walks and a base hit from Owen Estabrook in his first at-bat with the Sweets led to the bases being loaded. First baseman Tanner Kern drew a walk to score a run and draw the Sweets closer. However, with the bases loaded, Cadiz grounded out to first to end the threat.

In the third the Pickles responded to further increase the lead. With two on and two out, up came Schleichardt to the plate. On a two-strike count the Oregon native went yard once again for his second home run and fifth RBI of the game.

In the bottom of the fourth the Pickles kept the momentum. Tyler Harries was hit by a pitch to open the inning and came around to score when Petey Soto Jr. ripped an RBI double down the line. Soto Jr. finished 3-for-3. Jordan Lewis followed with a single to left, driving in Soto and giving the Pickles an 8-2 lead.

The Sweets kept fighting with a run in the top of the seventh and the top of the eighth, but once again could not get the big hit, leaving five runners on base in the final three frames. The Pickles finished the game with a 9-4 victory. With the win, the Pickles have won 11 straight games, a West Coast League record. The Sweets can salvage the series tomorrow at 7:15 p.m. Listen live on Mixlr.
