WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Colorado Mesa’s Alex Jennings and Trevor Tse, along with Bushnell’s Jacob Courtney, are ready for good vibes, sunshine and plenty of baseball in the city so nice they named it twice.
Courtney, a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher, features a four-pitch mix: a fastball, cutter, changeup and slider. His put away pitch is a high fastball. The College Place native was a three-time All-SCAC First-Team selection and a two-time WIAA SCAC East Player of the Year in high school. Although primarily known as a pitcher, Courtney was also a standout hitter, posting a .545 batting average as a senior. Don’t be surprised if he picks up a bat at some point this summer.
Courtney redshirted his freshman season at Bushnell while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He looks forward to returning to the mound.
“I’m going to be pretty excited. I’ll have to keep the adrenaline down,” Courtney said. “It’s going to be a pretty good feeling. All my family is going to be there, so it will be cool to pitch in front of them again after the injury.”
Courtney’s excitement is sure to carry throughout the season for the Sweets.
Next up is the first of two Colorado Mesa players, infielder Trevor Tse. The right-handed hitter can play all over the infield, with shortstop being his primary position. Out of Poway High School, Tse was ranked among the top 80 infielders in California and is known for his ability to get on base, steal bases and play elite defense. He is eager to compete in the West Coast League against high-level competition.
“Being in the WCL, I know that I will have to see some really good arms and a lot of really good players,” Tse said. “Another reason I chose Walla Walla was because I want to work on my craft and improve my game for CMU next year.”
Tse’s ability to work all parts of the field and balance contact with power makes him one of the most well-rounded hitters on the Sweets.
Finally, Colorado Mesa right-handed pitcher Alex Jennings joins the squad. The freshman reaches 90 mph with a strong pitch mix, including a four-seam fastball, changeup and his put away pitch, the slurve. In high school in San Diego, Jennings posted an ERA below 2.30 with more than 10 strikeouts per nine innings. Whether as a starter or out of the bullpen, he is expected to play a key role for both Colorado Mesa and the Sweets.
Jennings attributes his success to his mentality on the mound.
“I think the mental aspect of playing a long season is just not getting too ahead of yourself and not putting yourself too far down,” Jennings said. “I think as soon as you get comfortable and think you are at the top, it’s just all downhill from there.”
Jennings, Tse and Courtney aim to use their mental edge to make an impact this summer. Fans can catch all three players in action throughout the season. Season passes are on sale now, with the Sweets’ first home game set for June 6 against the Ridgefield Raptors.
