Sweets Lose Series Finale to Portland
WALLA WALLA, Wash. — Sweets drop their fifth game in a row, falling to the Portland Pickles 6-2 Wednesday night. Five games is the longest losing streak of the season for the Sweets.
Walla Walla opened the scoring for the first time this series, bringing home a run in the second inning. Stevie Hom got the inning started with a leadoff single. After some small ball and a wild pitch, he was brought home on an RBI single from Logan Meyer.
Portland responded with two runs in the top of the third to take a lead, but it was a lead that wouldn’t last long. The Sweets got another run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at two. Davis Mauzy got aboard with a two out single, then was moved into scoring position off a balk from the Portland pitcher. Cort MacDonald brought him home with an RBI single.
However, in the fifth, Portland took a lead that would end up sticking for the rest of the game. The Pickles scored two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and one more in the ninth to win 6-2.
The Sweets were held scoreless in the last six innings of the game and only got three hits in that span.
In the ninth, Walla Walla had their best chance to tie with two runners on and nobody out, but a weird ball off the bat of Kennedy Hara froze David Mysza at second, so he was thrown out at third in what ended up being a fielder’s choice. The out slowed the momentum of the Sweets, who left two on base as the game ended in favor of Portland.
With the loss, the Sweets fall to 9-20 overall and 0-3 in the second half of the season. Five losses in a row is the longest losing streak for the Sweets, passing their four straight losses in early June, also to Portland.
The Sweets have four non-league games upcoming, starting with a one-game matchup with the Cascade Collegiate League Showcase Team. Walla Walla has played the CCL the last four seasons and are 7-1 all time. This season, the Sweets are one of six WCL teams to play the CCL. They are currently 0-5 against WCL teams this year, losing twice to Springfield and Corvallis and once to Yakima Valley.
First pitch is set for 12:05 and Sweets’ coverage of the game can be found on the Sweets YouTube channel.
