Sweets Power Their Way to a Win Over Springfield

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — The got back into double digits in the hit column for the fourth time in five games as they raked 13 hits to bring home nine runs in their 9-3 win over the Springfield Drifters. The win evens up the series one game apiece between the two teams.

After the Sweets opened the scoring with an RBI double from Stevie Hom, starter Cam Soliz made an incredible play in the top of the second to keep the Sweets in front. With two on, and nobody out, Soliz dove for a bunted ball and made the catch for out number one, then fired the ball to second to double up the runner who ran on the bunt. Soliz then struck out the next batter to end the frame.

Springfield tied it in the third, but the Sweets responded with three runs of their own. Hom brought home the first run with a sacrifice fly, scoring Kennedy Hara. Kolby Felix brought home the other two with a double to left field.

In the fifth, the Sweets put the game away for good with three more runs to take a 7-1 lead. Felix brought two runs again, this time with a triple to center field. It was his first triple of the season and the team’s eighth. Felix came into score on a ball that was bobbled by the Drifters’ third baseman off the bat of Luka Ruljancich.

Two more runs were scored in the sixth and seventh, first with an RBI single from Felix, his fifth RBI of the night, bringing home David Mysza and Mysza returning the favor with an RBI groundout, scoring Joel Esparza.

Felix had a great day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with 5 RBI. That ties a season high for RBI set by Davis Mauzy June 2 at Bend. Combined with his homer in the first game of the series, Felix hit for the cycle over the last two games.

The other hitters with a multi-hit game were Mysza, Mason Millar, and Hara.

On the mound, Soliz got the second win for a Sweets’ starter this season. He tossed five innings, allowed just one run off five hits and struck out four.

Springfield got two runs in the sixth, but then the Sweets’ bullpen shut them down, pitching three scoreless innings to end the game, with only hit allowed collectively.

With the win, the Sweets improve to 8-14 on the year. They also even up the series with the Springfield Drifters 1-1. Thursday’s game is the rubber match between the two and will decide the series winner. Walla Walla has not lost a series to Springfield in franchise history and is also looking to win their second set in a row.

First pitch is set for 6:35 and Sweets’ coverage of the game can be found on the Sweets’ YouTube channel.
