Sweets Get First Walk-Off Win of the Season

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — Tied at three with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, a wild pitch brought home Kennedy Hara to give the Sweets the win over the Port Angeles Lefties 4-3. It is not only the first walk-off win of the season for Walla Walla, but also the first in two years, with the last one being July 14, 2022.

The ninth inning rally started with Walla Walla loading the bases with nobody out. Down 3-2, Logan Meyer led the frame off with a bloop single that bounced right in front of the center fielder. Hara took a pitch in the arm to get aboard, and JJ Moran reached on a throwing error from the Port Angeles pitcher on a sacrifice bunt.

The Lefties went into the bullpen and pulled out a new pitcher, Jack Joyce, who on the first pitch got a lineout at short to put one away.

Easton O’Neal then stepped up and lifted a ball to left field that was deep enough for Meyer to tag up and tie the game at three. It was a tight play at the plate, by Meyer was able to slide around the tag for the run.

After two balls to Stevie Hom, the next pitch was wild allowing Hara to score and win the game.

Port Angeles struck first in the top of the third, bringing home three runs. The third and final run was off a solo shot form Julio Vasquez Jr., the first home run of the season hit at Borleske Stadium.

The Sweets got two of the runs back in the bottom of the fourth. Luka Ruljancich slapped an RBI single to right to bring home Hom and Meyer brought home Kolby Felix on an RBI groundout.

Walla Walla had the tying run on third in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, but could not bring them home, setting up the ninth inning comeback.

On the mound, Zach Hangas made his third start of the season, striking out four in four innings. Cam Soliz pitched three innings out the bullpen and struck out a season-high five batters. Bridger Clontz pitched the final two innings for the Sweets and only allowed one baserunner during that time with a walk in the ninth. Clontz also struck out two batters to put the team total at 11.

Clontz got the win on the mound, making all three winning pitchers for the Sweets this season form Colorado Mesa.

With the win, Walla Walla improves to 3-8, and they have yet to be swept in a three game series this year. The Sweets will close out their seven-game home stand with a non-league game against the Redmond Dudes Friday. It is the first time since 2021 the Sweets will play the Dudes on the diamond. Walla Walla was 4-2 in non-league games last season. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
