Big Inning Dooms Sweets

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — A seven-run fourth inning pushed the lefties passed the Walla Walla Sweets Tuesday night, as the Sweets dropped the first of a three game set with the Port Angeles Lefties 7-1. Six of the seven runs in the frame were unearned with two errors in the inning leading to trouble.

Walla Walla started the game off strong. Newcomer Jace Wessels made a surprise start and struck out two batters in the top of the first, pounding the zone with strikes.

In the bottom of the first David Mysza drew a one-out walk and Davis Mauzy brought him home from second with an RBI single. After a stolen base, Stevie Hom slammed a double to left field, giving Mauzy the green signal around third. However, a really good relay throw from the Port Angeles shortstop, Jason Leon, allowed catcher Jack Kleveno to tag out Mauzy at the plate.

The tag out ended up being an omen for the rest of the game to come as the Sweets would never see third again and were kept without a hit for the next four innings.

In the fourth, the Sweets shot themselves in the foot with two defensive errors that led to 11 batters stepping up to the plate. Seven runs came into score, however, six of them were unearned. That was the last time either team would score.

Otho Savage tossed the final five innings for the Sweets and retired the first 10 batters he saw on the mound. He finished the game with no runs allowed, only one hit, one walk and two strikeouts.

The Sweets got baserunners in the latter innings but could not string together hits. In the top of the ninth, Walla Walla went 1-2-3 to end the game at an impressive 2;23, the second shortest game of the season.

With the loss, the Sweets fall to 2-7. They also lose their first inter-division game of the season, of which they have nine this year.

The Sweets will play the Lefties again Wednesday, June 12, with another 6:35 start. Wednesday’s game is Winning Wednesday, where fans will have a chance to win $500 provided by Legends Casino Hotel and a $100 gift card to a local business. For fans who can’t make it to the game, it will be streamed on the Sweets Digital Network
