Sweets Lose to Pickles in Series Opener

PORTLAND, Ore. — After back-to-back games cancelled due to rain in Portland, the Sweets finally got back on the field Wednesday night, but that is where the good news would end. The Pickles poured on the runs early and often against the Sweets, coming out on top 17-0. It is the biggest loss in Sweets history, passing a 16-run loss to Bend June 28, 2014.

The Pickles scored all of their runs in the first five innings. The opening three were the biggest innings, jumping out to a 13-0 lead.

The big killer for the Sweets pitching staff were the free passes they gave to the Pickles. Eighteen walks were issued along with five hit by pitches. That is 23 free passes compared to just 12 hits allowed.

At the plate, the Sweets only got two hits, both of them coming in the third inning. No Sweet got further than second base.

With the loss, Walla Walla drops to 1-3 on the year. They will play Thursday evening to wrap their season opening road trip. Thursday will be a makeup of the game originally scheduled for Monday.
