WALLA WALLA, Wash. — The Sweets roster is now at 12 for the 2024 season, with every single player so far having played with the Sweets in 2023. The newest batch of returners are outfielder Logan Meyer, and pitchers Zach Hangas and Cam Soliz.

Meyer, a junior at Ottawa University, played the second most games for the Sweets in 2023, appearing in 44 lineups. Meyer was the most consistent outfielder for Walla Walla, playing 38 games in the yard, mostly in right field with a handful of games in center as well. At the plate, Meyer registered 42 hits, with five doubles and a home run, for a slash line of .266/.379/.316. He had nine multi-hit games last season. His best game of the season was July 1 against the Bend Elks, going 3-for-5 with five RBI and one run. Meyer hit his first home run as a Sweet in the second inning bringing in three runs. He then brought on two insurance runs on his third hit of the night in the ninth inning.

2024 will be Meyer’s third season in Walla Walla, having played five of the final six games in 2022. He got his first career hit as a Sweet August 4, 2022, in a 7-2 win over the Ridgefield Raptors.

With the Ottawa Spirit in Surprise, Arizona, Meyer has started all 14 games and has 15 hits for a batting average of .294. Of those 14 games, four of them have been multi-hit games for the junior from Billings, Montana.

“I am super excited to be able to come back to the Sweets and play with old teammates and for head coach Jarrod Molnaa again,” said Meyer. “Walla Walla holds a special place in my heart.”

Hangas, also a junior from Ottawa University, was one of the main starters for the Sweets in 2023 and pitched the most innings. Hangas started nine games for Walla Walla and made one appearance out of the bullpen. He posted a 4-2 record with a 3.88 ERA. Hangas also totaled 30 strikeouts over 53.1 innings of work. His best start was July 19 with a 2-1 win over the Springfield Drifters. Hangas pitched a complete game while striking out six and allowing the lone run.

Like Meyer, 2024 will also be the third season in Walla Walla for Hangas, who tossed five games out of the bullpen in 2022. In his first summer, he never pitched more than two innings, and went four games without giving up a run.

With the Spirit, Hangas has already started five games and posted a 2-2 record. In both of his wins, Hangas did not allow a run in 11.1 combined innings. He also struck out 14 batters in 6.1 innings against Bethesda University February 9. Hangas only allowed one hit and two walks in that game, but was getting high in his pitch count which is why he couldn’t finish the seven-inning doubleheader game.

“I am really excited for the opportunity to join the Sweets for the summer along with playing another year for Jarrod Molnaa,” said Hangas.

Soliz, a junior from Texas A&M Corpus Christi, started four games and made one appearance out of the bullpen in 2023. The hurler from Kyle, Texas, posted a 1-1 record with a 2.01 ERA, with 16 strikeouts over 22.1 innings. His final outing was his first win, tossing five innings and only allowing two runs on two hits and striking out two batters as well in a 6-4 win over the Victoria HarbourCats. His best outing was June 23 when he tossed six scoreless innings and struck out six against Yakima Valley. Unfortunately, the Pippins rallied after Soliz had left the game, giving him a no decision.

With the Islanders in 2024, Soliz has made four appearances out of the bullpen. In those games, he has struck out six batters over seven innings of work. His first outing of the season was three scoreless innings in relief against the Washington Huskies.
