Roy Elia logging on – we’re so excited that the weather has finally caught up with the season! Spring sports are winding down in the Walla Walla Valley and that means – among other things -that the 10th season of
Walla Walla Sweets baseball is fast approaching. The 2019 campaign commences in six weeks…can you believe that?! A month ago we had a foot of snow on the ground.

This week’s edition of “10 Things”:

1. Future Sweet and Colorado Mesa sophomore Jordan Stubbings hit his seventh home run of the season Saturday as the Mavericks posted a 10-1 victory over New Mexico Highlands.
2. Sweet-to-be Ben Johnson connected for a tie-breaking two-run, eighth-inning single Saturday to lift Northwest Nazarene to a 10-8 triumph at Montana State Billings in the second game of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader. He is batting .317 – second best on the team.
3. In game one of the above-mentioned twin bill, former Sweet and Walla Walla Community College pitcher Jarrod Molnaa raised his record to 5-2 in Billings 15-11 win. Molnaa stuck out 12 over six-and-a-third innings.
4. Parker Price leads Northwest Nazarene this season with three triples and is one of four NNU players with a team-leading four home runs. He is second on the team in both hits (41) and runs batted in (26).
5. Patrick Caulfield went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored in Santa Barbara’s 12-7 loss to L.A. Pierce on April 17. He is
   hitting .354 with two homers, 31 RBIs, 23 runs scored and 25 stolen bases.
6. Former Sweet Chris Lincoln notched his ninth save as Big West-leading UC-Santa Barbara held off UC-Davis, 4-3, on Saturday. The Gauchos are 8-1 in league and 30-5 overall after recording their school-record tying 12th straight win.
7. Walla Walla Community College’s baseball team extended its winning streak to five games after taking both ends of a Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader from Big Bend, 10-5 and 8-4, on Saturday at Warrior Field. Current and future Sweets figured positively in the sweep. Brandon Wagstaff went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs, and Bradye Hirai fanned nine over seven innings in game one. Hurler Michael Peterson pitched the nightcap and allowed just three earned runs and K’d four.
8. The Mariners went 0-6 on their most recent homestand, but it may not have bothered Sweets Assistant GM and Ohio native Cody Miller all that much, since the three latter defeats came to his beloved Cleveland Indians.
9. A fun “did you know:” Sweets General Manager J.C. Biagi, who played at Walla Walla Community College in the early 2000s, participated in
   the longest game in school history, a 20-inning affair against Columbia Basin. He picked up the win in relief and hit a game-winning sacrifice fly in the game-one marathon, and pitched a complete-game win in the second game of the double dip.
10. 2018 Sweets broadcaster Brandon Pavlina just landed a job as evening radio host for The Boot radio (KTJJ) in Farmington, Mo.
