Moses Lake – The Walla Walla Sweets came away with a convincing victory over the Moses Lake Pirates on Saturday July 17th. Carried by a huge 6th inning, and solid pitching by starter Kody Young (Columbia Basin College), the Walla Sweets picked up a 6 – 2 win over the Pirates on Saturday evening. Young went 7 innings into the game, giving up only 2 runs on of 6 hits, and striking out 8 batters.
A pitching duel ensued at Larson Field for the first 5 innings, until Kevin Kuntz (Kansas) got on base to start a Walla Walla rally in the 6th inning. Elliot Stewart (Cal Poly) stepped up next and smacked an RBI double, bringing Kuntz around to score the first run of the ballgame. Next up was Andy Matthews, and he drove a deep single, advancing Stewart to third.
Just when things couldn’t get much better, a struggling Moses Lake pitcher walked Christian Ramirez (UC Irvine) aboard. This was enough to bring in the first reliever of the evening for the sinking Pirates. The first batter faced by the fresh arm was Josh Daniel (St. Johns). Daniel helped to sweeten the lead with an RBI single, followed by a wild pitch and a Dennis Holt (UCLA) 2 RBI single to give the Sweets a 5 – 0 lead.
Stewart went 3 for 4 on the night with an RBI and a run scored. Holt also had a great night at the plate going 2 for 4 with 2 RBI
Moses Lake slugger Trent Johnson attempted to rally his team with a 2 run homerun in the 6th. The effort just wasn’t enough as the Sweets walk away with their 10th win of the season.
