The Walla Walla Sweets made a strong run, but couldn’t overcome an early 4 run deficit, losing 6-4 to the Moses Lake Pirates.

The Sweets found their rhythm in the 4th inning with a solo home run from left fielder Andy Matthews (Lewis & Clark St). The 4th inning rally continued as Josh Daniel (St. John’s) and Scott Gottschling (UC Irvine) followed with a couple of solid base hits. Kevin Kuntz (Kansas) pulled them within 1 run with a 2 RBI single.

Moses Lake answered right back in the bottom of the 4th when Austin Shackelford (Utah) stepped up to the plate and blasted a 2-run home run, giving his team back its 3 run lead.

Matt Comer (Seattle University) picked up an RBI in the 5th inning, cutting the Pirate’s lead to 2. The remaining 4 innings of baseball saw a defensive battle. Both the Pirates and the Sweets were held scoreless for the rest of the game. Walla Walla’s starting pitcher Jake Kemmerer (Edmonds CC) pitched an impressive 8 innings without a relief, throwing 124 pitches.

Josh Daniel continued his batting onslaught this evening, going 2 for 3 from the plate. Kuntz went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, and Scott Gottschling was hitting well once again tonight, going 2 for 4 at the plate.
