Walla Walla -
The Walla Walla Sweets came into tonight’s game against the Wenatchee Applesox looking for their third consecutive win. The Sweets looked great on both sides of the bat tonight, but couldn’t keep the division leading Applesox from reeling in the win, 7 – 4.
Andy Matthews (Lewis & Clark St.) stopped Wenatchee from taking an early lead when he gunned out Applesox CF Trevor Brown (UCLA) at home plate with a massive throw from left field. The impressive arm from Matthews kept things scoreless rolling into the bottom of the 2nd inning.
Sweets’ Josh Daniel (St. John’s NY) showed up huge when he stepped up to the plate with two outs, and the bases loaded in the top of third. Daniel dug in deep and roped a 2 RBI single, scoring Denver Chavez (Cal Poly) and Marshall Yanzick (Cornell University), and giving the Sweets a 2 – 0 lead. Curtis Dupart (Washington State) smashed a giant solo home run in the fourth inning, his first of the season, and the fourth home run for the Sweets in their inaugural 2010 season.
A huge offensive run from Wenatchee in the bottom of the 5th stole the lead from the Sweets, and resulted in a pitching change from Walla Walla. The Sweets brought in reliever Zach Clanton (Lewis & Clark St.) to replace their starter Jake Kemmerer (Edmonds CC). Even with a new pitcher in the picture, Wenatchee continued their offensive onslaught into the 6th inning, scoring another run, and going up by 2.
The Applesox walked in a run in the top of the 7th, opening the door for a Sweets comeback late in the game. Unfortunately, Wenatchee’s bats stayed hot, and continued to pull away, scoring again in both the 8th and 9th inning.
Game 3 of the Sweets and Applesox series takes place tomorrow night in Wenatchee at 5:05 PM. You can always follow the game on www.wallawallasweets.com or catch Andrew Allegretta on ESPN 1490.
