The Jayhawks made a deep run in the 2009 NCAA College Tournament |
Walla Walla, Washington (November 12, 2009) – The task is clear: build a competitive roster for the 2010 season. That process has started for the Walla Walla Sweets, and it begins with three players from a Big XII program that is widely considered a potential candidate for Omaha in 2010.
The Walla Walla Sweets have signed catcher James Stanfield, infielder Jordan Dreiling and infielder Kevin Kuntz, all of the University of Kansas (Big XII Conference) to agreements to play for the West Coast League expansion franchise in 2010. All three figure to play a significant role this coming season for the Jayhawks as the program looks to build on the breakthrough season they enjoyed in 2009, when they received an at-large bid to the NCAA Baseball tournament and won 39 games while reaching the final round of the Chapel Hill Regional. Kuntz is the son of former big leaguer Rusty Kuntz, who is currently part of the Kansas City Royals front office.
“Any championship team is strong up the middle on defense,” said Sweets GM Zachary Fraser. “That is where we are going to start, and I am confident that these three – James, Jordan, and Kevin – will be a good step in that direction. They come highly recommended from a program that has quickly become one of the elite programs in a top conference.”
The Sweets open the 2010 season at renovated Borleske Stadium on June 8, 2010. The franchise begins play against defending league champion and division rival Wenatchee Applesox. Season tickets can be secured by calling 509.522.BALL or by visiting www.wallawallasweets.com.
