Virant, a senior at Camarillo High School, has signed with the Sweets for the 2012 season
WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Walla Walla Sweets have made a significant addition to their roster with the signing of Hunter Virant, a 6-foot 3-inch, 175-pound southpaw from southern California. Virant will join the Sweets after his graduation from Camarillo High School and prior to attending UCLA as a freshman. Baseball America, Perfect Game and mlb.com all project Virant to be among the first 30 players selected in this years’ Major League Baseball amateur draft.
“Hunter is widely considered to be among the top amateur talents in the country,” said Sweets’ general manager Zachary Fraser. “Our fans should be excited to see him in action at Borleske Stadium this summer.”
His athletic ability has allowed him to play multiple positions throughout his high school career including first base and outfield. Although he shows potential at the plate, Virant is projected to be drafted as one of the top left-handed pitchers in 2012.
“He’s a four-pitch guy who features a low 90’s fastball and quality off-speed stuff that will provide a challenge for hitters in the WCL,” said Sweet’s manager J.C. Biagi. “He is projected as one of the top arms in this year’s MLB draft class, and it’ll be fun to see him grow throughout the summer as he takes the next step in his career.”
According to espn.go.com Virant is ranked as the fifth best California high school prospect in the class of 2012. In 2011, as a junior, he appeared in the Perfect Game All-American Classic, and played for the Milwaukee Brewers in the Area Code Baseball Games. Last season at Camarillo, Virant went 6-1, with a 1.84 ERA in 57 innings pitched, and was named the 2011 Pacific View League’s pitcher of the year. At the plate, he hit .452 with 15 RBI, 14 doubles, one triple, and two home runs.
“I’m looking forward to being in Washington this summer and experiencing the level of competition the West Coast League offers,” said Virant.
Opening Night for the Sweets, presented by Northwestern Mutual, will be June 1 at 7:05 P.M. The Sweets will open the season against the WCL Champion Corvallis Knights in a re-match of the 2011 championship series.
