Arizona Heat to Warm Up Walla Walla for the Sweets in 2010

WALLA WALLA, WA (March 10, 2010) – Three prospects from Arizona will make their way to the Pacific Northwest to join Walla Walla in 2010, adding some big bats and speed to a lineup that will need offensive production in spacious Borleske Stadium. Jesus Martinez and Mat Harjung, both outfielders, and Karsten Strieby, a first baseman, have agreed to contracts with the expansion Sweets.

“With how deep Borleske plays, we wanted to add a few pieces to the roster that can both neutralize the space on defense with speed and take advantage of the space on offense with consistent gap-to-gap power,” said Sweets GM Zachary Fraser. “The ACCAC consistently produces top draft picks in the MLB draft, and we are excited to have identified players from this conference that will be great additions to our club.”

Strieby, a  6’ 6”, 225 lb. freshman at Arizona Western College in Yuma, AZ, is originally from Brier, WA, and is currently hitting .359 through 20 games with the Matadors. His brother, Ryan, is currently a first baseman for the Detroit Tigers.

Martinez, a 6’ 0” sophomore at Pima Community College in Tucson, AZ, is a Tucson native. Known for his speed and defensive abilities, the Sweets will look to Martinez to cover the vast outfield expanse in center field.

Harjung, a 6’3” 175 lb. freshman at Cochise College in Cochise County, AZ, is a native of Scottsdale, AZ and an alumnus of Arizona high school baseball powerhouse Chaparral. Harjung played in the Arizona Summer Collegiate League in 2009, where he hit .392, finishing second on his team with 56 AB. A left-handed bat, he can play all three outfield positions as well as first base.

The Sweets, an expansion franchise in the West Coast League, will open up the 2010 season by hosting defending league champion Wenatchee AppleSox at Borleske Stadium on June 8. Season tickets are now available by calling 509.522.BALL (2255) or by visiting www.wallawallasweets.com.
