A Pair of Midwest Hurlers Join the Sweets in 2010

Walla Walla, WA (December 1, 2009) – Most of the Sweets roster in 2010 will feature players from major baseball conferences at the Division I level. However, prospects are found at all levels of the collegiate game, and the Walla Walla club has mined two gems from smaller Midwest schools that will add depth and talent to the pitching staff. Jordan McLaughlin, a sophomore RHP from Truman State (MO) University and B.J. Sieverding, a sophomore RHP from St. Joseph’s College of Indiana, have both agreed to contracts with the Sweets for the 2010 season. Their signings were announced by general manager Zachary Fraser. “Both Jordan and B.J. are from smaller programs, but come highly recommended from their coaches and from pro scouts,” said Fraser. “We anticipate that they will be solid contributors to our club.” McLaughlin, who redshirted in 2009 after transferring from Rockhurst (MO) University, is scheduled to be in the starting rotation for the Bulldogs in 2010. He was a first-team All-City pitcher at Central High School in St. Joseph, MO his senior season, where he also played outfield. Sieverding, from Versailles, IN, went 2-1 with a 2.38 ERA for the Pumas in 2009 as a freshman. He made 18 appearances out of the bullpen, where he struck out 27, but looks to join the starting rotation for coach Rick O’Dette in 2010. The Sweets, an expansion franchise in the West Coast League, will open up the 2010 season by hosting defending league champion Wenatchee AppleSox at Borleske Stadium on June 8.
