Offense Explodes for Eight Runs in Win Over the HarbourCats

Jackson Weeg started the game for the Sweets and went four solid innings.

WALLA WALLA, Wash- The Walla Walla Sweets’ (2-0) bats dominated in its 8-3 win over the Victoria HarbourCats (0-2) on Saturday night. The win gave the Sweets the series victory in the opening clash.

Walla Walla got the start from Jackson Weeg (Emory), who went four innings, giving up three runs (two earned) and picked up a no-decision. The win went to AJ Carkner (Pikeville) for the Sweets, who pitched 3 innings, giving up two hits and striking out five.

Walla Walla opened up the scoring in the bottom half of the first with a pair of RBIs by Nick Nyquist (Gonzaga) and Hayden Duer (Cal State Monterey Bay). Victoria then answered back with a run in the top of the second and two in the top of the third to take the lead.

The bottom of the fourth brought a bit of a surprise to the fans at Borleske Stadium. With runners on second and third with no one out, Anthony Acosta (Chaminade) attempted to lay down a suicide squeeze bunt, but missed the ball completely. With Duer running on the pitch, the catcher, Hayden Jaco (Vernon College) dropped the ball and Duer scored. The runner on second, Austin Kopacz (Briar Cliff) moved up on the pitch as well. The very next pitch, manager Frank Mutz called another suicide squeeze and the Sweets executed it to perfection to score Kopacz.

That made the score 4-3 Sweets and they would tack on four more in the bottom of the seventh inning and win by a final of 8-3.

HarbourCats manager Graig Merritt was thrown out of the game in the bottom half of the first for arguing a play at second base.

The Sweets will send Joe Heineman (Baylor) to the hill for game three as they look for the sweep. The HarbourCats starter is to be determined.
