RHP Chris Lincoln (UC Santa Barbara) has been named WCL Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 17 – 23.
Lincoln electrified the home crowd, turning in a performance to remember against the Corvallis Knights on Wednesday, July 19th.
Blanking the first-place Knights over 6.2 dominant innings, Lincoln allowed just two hits, walked three, and struck out 12.
Not only was Lincoln’s start the longest of the season for a Sweets pitcher, his dozen strikeouts are the most for the franchise in nearly a full calendar year.
LHP Chris Murphy (San Diego) was the last Sweet to whiff 12 opposing batters. He did so on July 23rd, 2016 against the Gresham GreyWolves.
Lincoln struck out the side in order twice on Wednesday – in both the fourth and sixth inning. He retired 13 in a row, save for a dropped third strike, from the third to the seventh inning.
The last Sweets Pitcher of the Week was LHP Jackson Weeg (Emory), who won the award for the first week of July 2016.
Lincoln, who will be entering his sophomore season with the Gauchos, was a 13th round pick by the Toronto Blue Jays out of Rancho Verde HS in 2016.
As a true freshman at UCSB, Lincoln appeared in 18 games, starting three. He filled multiple roles last spring, pitching as a starter, as a late-inning reliever, as a middle reliever, and as a long reliever.
Lincoln posted a 1-3 record with one save and a 4.82 ERA. He struck out 25 in 28 innings of work. He K’d a career-high six batters in a start against UC – Riverside on April 3rd and matched it a week later in a start against UC – Davis.
Chris has 19 strikeouts in 11.2 innings over his last two WCL starts.
Here is the official press release from the West Coast League. Bellingham's Chase Illig was named WCL Player of the Week.
