SWEETS NIPEPD BY GREYWOLVES

The Sweets lost their fourth consecutive contest. They were beaten 7-2 by the Gresham GreyWolves at Oslund Field on Monday night.

The Sweets were outplayed on both sides of the ball. The Gresham bats out-hit the Sweets 14-7 and ‘Wolves pitching whiffed 13 Sweets hitters.

Gresham grabbed a first inning run off of Sweets starter LHP Haydn King (San Francisco). CF Mike Peabody (UC-Irvine) led off with a single and a two-out hit from 1B Drew Curtis (Southern Illinois) brought him home.

Walla Walla rallied to tie in the third. Facing GreyWolves starter RHP Robert Reaser (Lewis & Clark), the Sweets executed one of their patented double steals. 2B Kevin Jordan (Loyola Marymount) scored in the chaos and CF Danny Sinatro (Washington State) slid safely into second on the back end.

But Gresham went back ahead with two runs in the fifth. After King worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth, he let up a single to Peabody and a triple to SS Alec de Watteville (Sacramento State). The three-bagger was a high fly ball that Sweets RF Jake Suddleson (Harvard) lost in the sun.

When King was removed, RHP Cameron Deere (Brown) let up a double to Curtis that scored the inherited runner, de Watteville.

The Sweets halved the deficit in the top of the sixth. Another double steal, this time from Sinatro and 3B Nick Nyquist (Gonzaga) behind him, brought the Sweets back to within 3-2.

But in the bottom of the sixth, the ‘Wolves went ahead for good. They scored four runs and put six of seven batters on base.

The Sweets were shut down completely by Gresham LHP Chris Brown (UC-Davis), who pitched the final three innings in relief of Reaser. Brown allowed no runs on three hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

The Sweets fall to 1-4 on the second half and back to .500 at 16-16 overall. Gresham grabbed their second win of the second half and improves to 2-5 (12-22 overall).

Reaser (1-3) won. King (0-2) lost. Brown, by virtue of pitching three innings, got his first save.

Peabody was 5-for-5 with five singles.

The Sweets will try to split the series tomorrow night. They will send RHP Travis Ulvestad (Seattle) to the mound for his first start. He will oppose Gresham’s RHP Alex Roth (Western Oregon).

First pitch will be at 6:35 p.m. from Oslund Field in Gresham. The Sweets will then return to Borleske for a five-game homestand.
