7/17 - Walla Walla  at Moses Lake:

6-2 Win
- Walla Walla scored 5 runs in the top of the 6th - that's the most runs the Sweets have scored in an innings since June 18th. Walla Walla scored 5 runs in the 2nd during a 7-6 win v. Cowlitz.
- Elliot Stewart is back on a pretty good hitting streak. It's up to five. He had a 6-game streak earlier this year. The Cal-Poly catcher has hit safely in 11 of the last 12 games.
- These games haven't been cheap either. He's had more than one hit in seven of those games.
- Kody Young gave up his league-leading 5th home run.
- That's pretty much Kody's only issue right now. His K/BB ratio has been very good. 26 K to 6 BB in his four starts this year.

7/16 - Walla Walla at Moses Lake:
6-4 Loss
- Walla Walla is 6 games out of a playoff spot with 18 to go. Not impossible, but difficult to say the least. The Sweets really need to take the next two against Moses Lake - mainly because they own the last playoff birth.
- A lot of credit to Jake Kemmerer tonight. Obviously didn't have his best stuff - 6 ER throught the first four innings - but he was a battler tonight. With a thin bullpen this weekend, he needed to fight through his problems and he did. Ended up going 8 innings and keeping the Sweets in the ball game.
- Really, the fact that Moses Lake got four runs in the 1st is impressive. That's the exact time the sun is setting over the left field wall. The general tone from Sweets hitters was they couldn't believe Moses Lake could see the ball well enough to get that many hits. Pretty clear case of home-field advantage right there.
- Stewart (.368), Gottschling (.393), and Daniel (.400) continue to be the best hitters in the month of July for the Sweets. They each had two hits tonight.

7/14 - Walla Walla v. Kelowna:

POST-GAME
7-4 Loss
- As these losses get more and more difficult, I'm going to keep it brief. Here's two numbers that stand out.
- 1: Walla Walla is 6-4 when leading after 6 innings. That was the case tonight before the bullpen gave up five runs in the 7th. Those four losses are the worst in the WCL.
- 2: While it wasn't the case tonight, this next number is still startling and plays to this theme - the Sweets are 7-4 when leading after 8. No other team has two. Three teams have zero.

7/13 - Walla Walla v. Kelowna:

POST-GAME
5-2 Loss
- No Sweets hitter had more than one hit. Four had zero.
- Jake Haight had an interesting evening. He went 1-2-3 in his first inning of work. He his second he gave up 2 H, BB, and 3 R. Bad timing. It was the top of the 9th.
- Sweets P Mike Richard - who is now done for the season with an elbow problem - was my color commentator on the broadcast tonight and he made an interesting point about the pitching staff. Walla Walla has one type of pitcher: Righties that throw mid-80s. No matter who manager J.C. Biagi brings in, the opposing hitters are seeing basically the same thing. It's impossible to mix-and-match.
- Ryan Richardson is the tough luck pitcher of the Sweets' staff. In his last four starts, the righty has given up an average of 2.48. His run support? 2 runs per game. Three of those starts have been ND. The one decision? A loss.

Last Time v. Kelowna

- Walla Walla took two or three for the Sweets only series win so far this season.

- G1: 10-5 W. Curtis Dupart went 2-5 with 3 RBI. 8 of 9 players in the Sweets line-up had a hit.

- G2: 8-7 W in 10. James Stanfield had the game-winning RBI single in the top of the 10th.

- G3: 15-1 L. Falcons P Brandon Creel tossed a strong 7 innings - 1 R, 2 BB, and 7 K.

 Falcons Quick Facts

- Dayne Quist has been one of the best pitchers in the league. He leads the WCL in ERA at 1.04. He was named the WCL Player of the Week last week.

- Kelowna his displayed good power so far this year. Its second in HR with 11. Bend is far and away first at 22. The big bats for the Falcons are Royce Bolinger and Jesse Sawyer - each with four. Sawyer had one HR off of Mike Richard when Walla Walla was up in Kelowna.

- C Kevin Hawk went to the same high school in Bosie, ID as Sweets pitcher Chris Kerns.

- OF Aaron Jones was drafted out of high school by the Red Sox in the 38th of this year’s draft.

7/10 - Walla Walla at Wenatchee:

PRE-GAME
- Pitching match-up: Sweets RHP Jacob Kemmerer (Edmonds CC) v. AppleSox RHP Marco Gonzales (LCC)
- Kemmerer is 1-1 in 3 games started. He has 3.95 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP. Last time we saw the righty he went 7.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R...before turning it over to the bullpen, who blew a 2-1 9th inning lead. Walla Walla lost that game 7-4 to Moses Lake in 11 innings.
- Late change...Culligan is having small arm problems. Gonzales was scheduled for tomorrow, but has been bumped up to today.

7/9 - Walla Walla at Wenatchee:

POST-GAME:
4-2 Win
- Seriously, the East division is strange. Like a week and a half ago Wenatchee was just running things. 11-4...way out in a front. But now the AppleSox have lost 7 of 8 and Moses Lake has won 8-10. Things are close...which is good for the Sweets. Despite all the problems, Walla Walla is just 4 games back of a playoff spot.
- C Elliot Stewart snapped his 6-game hitting streak, going 0-5. Pretty strong ride for the Cal-Poly guys, but it wasn't even close to the longest hitting streak in the WCL this season. Chris Sturdivant of the Bellingham Bells had a 12-game streak from 6/23 to 7/6.
- On a side note, get this...the longest on-base streak so far this year was Tommy Richard from Bend. He went 19 straight games - from 6/11 to 7/6.
- Wenatchee comes in with three of the top four OBP guys - Clayton Eslick (.495), Collin Bennett (.481), and Eric Peterson (.457). Not a bad job tonight by Sweets' pitchers against them - a .333 OBP.
- A little plug for my FIP post on 7/6. FIP is a pitching stat that can help predict how a pitcher will do in the future. A.J. Burke's FIP said his ERA should be about .50 lower. Well tonight he get halfway there...going from 4.50 to 4.24. Tomorrow's starter Jake Kemmerer - his FIP says his ERA should be about.25 higher...so we'll see.

7/8 - Off Day:

- Had a pretty good team dinner with the front office staff in attendance, as well. Good to see everyone together - and in a social situation not wearing uniforms.

- Following up the Daniel Dillard story I mentioned the other day. I spoke to the Knights outfielder before yesterday's game. Here's what he told me:
- He took pictures for the Hornets two years ago as an internship. He's an art major at Western Oregon.
- His uncle is New Orleans president Hugh Weber - so yes, that's a nice little connection to get you in the door.
- He sat courtside right next to all the big photo agencies - Getty, AP, so on.
- They used some of his pictures for the team website and billboard ads (like on a bus, for example).
- He said it was an amazing experience and quite obviously learned so much with the internship than he ever would in a classroom.
- So would he rather be a baseball player or photographer? He said how about a baseball player that carries his camera around with him.
- And as a small side note, Dillard has two tattoos...he has mustaches tattooed on the inside of his pointer and middle fingers. Whatever works for ya, I guess. He says no regrets.

- Bit of a rough day for Sweets P Jake Kemmerer. The righty is a Cavs fan (a lot of his family grew up in Ohio) and wasn't too thrilled when he found out LeBron James picked Miami.

- Getting ready for the Wenatchee series starting Friday. Here are the Sweets that played well against the AppleSox the first time around:
1. C James Stanfield: 3-9, 2 2B, 2 RBI
2. INF Marshall Yanzick: 3-7, RBI
3. P Brian Biagi: 4 IP, 0 R, 2 H, .167 OAVG

- Wenatchee is on a slide right now: 1-6.
- It's pitching staff is really struggling during this stretch - a 5.61 ERA
- That number looks a lot worse when you compare it to the AppleSox's ERA before the slump - 3.02.

- Breaking down some L v. R stats...
From the hitting side
- Right-hander Andy Matthews
v. RHP: .229 AVG (8-35)
v. LHP: ..429 AVG (6-14, 3B, RBI)
From the pitching side
- LHP Mike Richard
v. Righties: .310 OAVG
v. Lefties:   .136 OAVG
(He's seen about double the amount of righties, but still telling numbers.)

7/7 - Walla Walla v. Corvallis:

POST-GAME
6-5 Win
- Sweets got two runs in the bottom of the 8th to leap frog the Knights. C Stewart and OF Matthews had the RBI hits in that inning.
- Stewart is on fire right now. He has a 6-game hitting streak and is 11-24 with 7 RBI and a HR during that stretch.
-
It was the first late-game comeback win for the Sweets all year. They were 0-12 in games they trailed after 6 innings.
- Tonight was also the first time Corvallis lost a game in which it scored first. It was 9-0 before tonight.
- Walla Walla didn't make an error for just the 5th game. Oddly enough, it's only the second game Walla Walla has won when it didn't make an error.

PRE-GAME
Pitching match-up: Sweets Ryan Richardson (Walla Walla CC) v. Knights Dean McCardle (Stanford)
- Richardson has been the best pitcher for the Sweets so far this season. He leads the team in ERA (2.95), opponents batting average (.224), and opponents on-base percentage (.283). The righty started in the bullpen and then moved to the rotation. He's only started two games and is 0-1. But he hasn't received much run support - just 2 runs in the 14.1 IP as a starter.
- McCardle has started three games for the Knights. He has a 1-1 record with a 6.32 ERA. In his last start, McCardle went just 3 IP with 5 H and 2 ER. The Stanford righty was the 2009 Iowa Gatorade HS baseball player of the year.

Fun facts learned at Borleske yesterday

So what do players do on their off-day? Here's a brief rundown of what a few guys did on Monday:

- Scott Gottschling: Golfing with his brother.
- Christian Ramirez: Mariners game with his host family.
- Brian Biagi & Karsten Strieby: Bass fishing along the Walla Walla River. Karsten caught one bass - about 1 lbs. But Biagi was the more successful fisher.
- Marshall Yanzick, Josh Daniel, Danny Poplawski, amoung others: Swimming on the Touchet River...Yanzick said he followed it up with more swimming at Matt Hart's host family's pool and then sleeping. These guys play baseball all year round. When you get a day of, you got to catch up on the rest.
- Kevin Kuntz: The plan was to go to the Mariners-Royals game to see his dad, Rusty - the 1B coach for the Royals...don't know if that actually happened, but it was the plan.

- A connection between the Sweets and Knights: Danny Poplawski and Matt Boyd are from the same hometown and have played summer baseball together since they were about 11 years old. I asked Poplawski if Boyd could beat him at anything baseball-related. Poplawski said, "nahhh." Then he paused and said, "yeahhh." Appearently Boyd has always been the kid that hit 3rd or 4th in the line-up and his fastball had tail on it at like 11 or 12 years old. You can actually toss Jake Haight into this connection. Haight, Poplawski, and Boyd all played on the same Connie Mack team in '08 - the Mudville Pinnacle of Mercer Island. That team won the Triple Crown Wood Bat National Championship in Grand Junction, CO at Suplezio Field - the home of the Junior College World Series.
(Thanks to Kurt Boyd for emailing me and rounded out the story. I assume it's Matt's dad. I responded to his email to confirm that, but haven't seen a reponse yet. Either way, thanks...UPDATE: Got that return email. It was his dad.)

- I heard that Daniel Dillard spent some time recently as a photographer for the New Orleans Hornets...I'll speak to him today and find out a little more...

New Guys in the Sweets Dugout:
- The UCLA guys are here...
- Dennis Holt was in uniform last night (number 17). He's an OF/LHP. He played 10 games for the Bruins - all in the OF. He went 6-10 with 3 RBI. The Bruins pitching staff was way too stacked for a freshman to crack the line-up.
- Infielder Adrian Williams. He made his way to Walla Walla this afternoon. He played in 23 games, starting one. He was 6-21, RBI, 3 BB, and 4 K. He made 4 errors in his limited time.
- And the last guy added to the Sweets roster: Deven Braden from Chico State in California. He's a Bosie, ID native and went to the same high school as Sweets P Chris Kerns. They overlapped by one year. Braden is an '06 grad, and Kerns is '09. Braden plays 2B and only made 2 errors in 51 gms - that could be a welcomed addition for a team that's made a WCL-worst 49 errors in 22 games. Braden hit .311 with 7 HR and 27 RBI.

7/6 - Walla Walla v. Corvallis:

POST-GAME
6-3 Loss
- For the first time in a while, it was the starter that struggled. Chris Kerns went just 3.1, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 2 K.
- And for the first time in a while, the bullpen was fairly strong. Jake Haight was okay - and certainly better when compared to his first game with the Sweets. He went 3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, and 2 K.
- Brian Biagi was the best pither tonight. 2.2 IP, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K.
- ...scroll down to the "Off Day" post as to why it's a turn around that the starter struggled and bullpen did well.
- Walla Walla made three errors...that gives it just one shy of 50 in only 22 games played.
- Sweets hitters struck out 8 times - exactly their per/game average, which is last in the WCL, by the way.

CLICK HERE FOR POST-GAME INTERVIEW W. SCOTT GOTTSCHLING

PRE-GAME
- Pitching match-up: Sweets Chris Kerns (Southern Idaho) v. Knights Dylan Jones (Oregon State)
- Chris Kerns is making his first official start of the season. The righty started an exhibition game against the Yakima Bears (he went 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R in that game).
- Kerns has been a primary bullpen arm for the Sweets this season - 3.94 ERA w/ 1 SV in 16 IP.
- Dylan Jones has started two games for the Knights. He has a 1-0 record with a 1.27 ERA.
- The most significant stats for him are K and BB - 17 K to 3 BB. That could be a problem for the Sweets because they average 8 K/gm - last in the WCL.

***OVERDOSING ON STATS***

- I've been a little stats-happy here on the game notes recently...and it's continuing today. I calculated our pitchers' FIP. If you're not up to speed on sabermetrics, read this article by Bill Simmons of ESPN - it helps bring these stats into the mainstream. Anyway, the goal of FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching) is to eliminate factors pitchers can't control (defense, bloop singles, etc.) and focus on the things they can control (HR, K, BB). It's on the same scale as ERA...so 3.00 is very good, 4.00 is okay, and so on. But the most important thing about FIP is it can be a good indicator about how a pitcher will do in the future. If their FIP is a lot lower than their ERA, they should get better in their next couple appearances, and visa versa.

So here we go...a breakdown of the Sweets pitchers by FIP...

PITCHER - FIP - (current ERA)

1. Ryan Richardson:     3.02 (2.95)
2. Jacob Overbay:         3.41 (6.14)
3. Chris Kerns:             3.89 (3.94)
4. A.J. Burke:               4.03 (4.50)
5. Brian Biagi:               4.13 (4.75)
6. Jacob Kemmerer       4.22 (3.92)
7. Mike Richard:           4.34 (4.94)
8. Zach Clanton:           4.36 (5.21)
9. Kody Young:            4.82 (3.32)

(*I only included pitchers with 10+ IP)

So what to take away from this? A couple things...

1. Jacob Overbay should have a stronger second half.
2. Kody Young has been one of the better pitchers, but these numbers suggest he will come back down to earth.
3. Ryan Richardson is the best pitcher so far...but we already knew that.

Hope to see you at Borleske tonight. If not, listen on 1490 ESPN Walla Walla or here on wallawallasweets.com. Back to the fun facts about our players later tonight and tomorrow.

7/5 - Off Day

Getting some small things done, including editing those, "Hey this is so-and-so, and you're listening to Sweets baseball on 1490 ESPN Walla Walla." We call them "rejoins." Anyway, there were plenty of outtakes. Check out this one from Josh Daniel:

CLICK HERE FOR JOSH DANIEL REJOIN OUTTAKE

***CRUNCHING SOME NUMBERS***

- Well here's your key stat of the past seven games: Starters ERA v. Bullpen ERA. I'm warning you now, it's ugly...

Starters: 2.68
Bullpen: 6.53

Zach Clanton bears a heavy burden of the problem. Here's a pitcher-by-pitcher ERA breakdown (with the expection of Joey Wagman, who's only gone .2 IP):

Clanton: 12.27
Kerns: 6.35
Richard: 4.91
Overbay: 4.70

...the discrepancy during the complete 2-12 slide isn't as bad, but it's still pretty bad.

Starters: 4.60
Bullpen: 6.03

Sweets Top 10 OPS (OBP+SLG)
- This is a big sabermetrics stat (link to sabermetrics wikipedia page if you're not familiar with it). Keep in mind not everyone has played in the same number of games. For instance, Stewart has only had 29 at-bats. That means his number probably comes down as he plays more games. But guys showing up late...guys coming and going...guys rotating in and out of the line-up...it's all part of summer ball. That's why I didn't set a minimum number of plate appereance when I put this together.

1. C Elliot Stewart (Cal Poly):                  .930
2. 3B Matt Hart (USC):                           .852
3. SS Kevin Kuntz (Kansas):                   .752
4. OF Christian Ramirez (UC Irvine):     .742
5. C James Stanfield (Kansas):                .672
6. C Josh Daniel (St. John's):                  .644
7. OF Andy Matthews (L-C State):       .642
8. SS Marshall Yanzick (Cornell):           .619
9. 1B Karsten Strieby (AZ Western):     .604
10. DH Curtis Dupart (WSU):                .595

7/4 - Walla Walla v. Moses Lake:

POST-GAME
7-4 Loss in 11 innings
- Walla Walla still hasn't won back-to-back games since 6/11 & 6/12 in Kelowna.
- The Sweets have lost 4 straight extra-inning games (2-4 overall).
- 6 of the 7 runs were given up by the Sweets' bullpen.
- With the Sweets up 2-1 in the top of the 9th, Zach Clanton (L-C State) gave up the game-tying run - his second blown save of the week.

- Starter Jake Kemmerer (Edmonds CC) had a great start - 7.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 0 K.

CLICK HERE FOR POST-GAME INTERVIEW W. JAKE KEMMERER

PRE-GAME
- Pitching match-up: Sweets - Jacob Kemmerer (Edmonds) v. Pirates - Drew Martin (Wenatchee Valley).
- Kemmerer has started two games for Walla Walla. He's 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA. He got touched up a little bit against Bend, but had a nice game v. Bellingham in the Sweets only win on the 9-game road trip. (Side note: his biggest dilemma before the Bellingham start was if he should run to a nearby convience store to buy a razor blade so he could shave off his goatee. He did not.)
- Martin has been one of the Pirates better pitchers so far this year. He's 3-1 with a 2.85 ERA. His WHIP is 1.14. He threw Moses Lake's only complete game.

Fun facts learned at Borleske yesterday

- Marshall Yanzick and AJ Burke played on the same 7th grade baseball team.

- Talked to Karsten Strieby about playing in front of Brad Bohannon (University of Kentucky assistant coach and recruiting director) on Friday night. He said he was pretty excited about it and obviously he wanted to put on a good show, but during the game he didn't over-stress about it too much. He said he wasn't nervous because he's played in front of MLB scouts before. Although, it was the first big-time college recruiter he's played in front of, so that was a little unique for him. Strieby didn't get a chance to talk to Bohannon after the game because Bohannon had to catch a flight to see more players in the Northwest. How did Karsten think he did? "Okay. I had two singles." Strieby said he has to graduate from a junior college before he can move to a DI school. So if he gets an offer from Kentucky - which he said he hopes he'll get sometime during this upcoming school year - he wouldn't play for them until the 2011-2012 school year. Remember, Kartsen's older brother, Ryan, played for UK in '06 and was the SEC Player of the Year.

- Moses Lake head coach Steve Keller had a pretty good chance to scout a few of his players before the season started. Washington State played Seattle University at Wentachee Valley College on April 13th in a game organized by Jim Corcoran (Wentachee AppleSox owner and GM...and Keller is the head coach at Wenatchee Valley). Moses Lake has four Seattle players on its team - Nate Roberts, Eric Yardley, Bryndon Ecklund, and Alex Kuniyoshi. Roberts went 0-4 and Ecklund was 2-4 with an RBI in the game. But the biggest reason Keller was excited? Roberts and Ecklund were the loudest, most energetic, and most positive guys in the dugout.

- A lot of connections between the Pirates and Sweets...Andy Matthews (Sweets) and Trent Johnson (Pirates) played on rival teams during high school in Idaho Falls, ID. Matthews played for Skyline High. Johnson was at Idaho Falls High. So how well do they know each other? "Oh, we're best friends."...Joe Huwer (Pirates) played on the same high school team as Chris Kerns in Bosie, ID. Huwer was two years ahead of Kerns. Kerns said Huwer was a big-time player as a senior, setting the school record in batting average (more than .500) and winning conference player of the year. Kerns followed in Huwer's footsteps. Kerns also won conference player of the year when he was a senior.

7/3 - Walla Walla v. Moses Lake:

POST-GAME
5-2 Win
- Josh Daniel has the big night at the plate: goes 2-3, 3 RBI, and a triple. A welcomed stat line for him. He was 2-14 with 6 K in his four previous games.
- Kody Young was strong on the mound. The big 6'5" righty tosses 8 IP, 7 H, 7 K, 2 BB.
- It's the second straight good start for him. He pitched 7 innings of 3 run baseball at Kitsap with 6 K and 1 BB.

***CHECK THESE STATS***
- Walla Walla has only had a pitcher throw 5 more K in a game than BB. Kody Young has two of those games. Brian Biagi on 6/25 has the other.
- Before tonight...during the 1-11 stretch, Sweets pitchers had 5 more K than BB COMBINED in the 12 games. Oppenents pitchers during that stretch? They had 60! Great job by Young to slow that trend.
- Moses Lake and Walla Walla came in with a combined 1 HR (the Sweets hit it)...for two teams without a lot of pop, both had home runs. Nick Frederick for ML and Elliot Stewart for WW. He has both Sweets home runs.
- Walla Walla has a WCL-worst .284 SLG%. That's not a great number. The Houston Astros are last in MLB at .342. But before you (or I) go too hard on the Sweets...that number actually isn't that bad for a wood-bat college summer league. Worst in the Northwoods League is the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (.274). And last place in the Cape Cod League is the Hyannis Harbor Hawks (.257).
- Walla Walla is now 6-7 in "close" games (decided by 3 runs or less). The Sweets started 3-0 in that category. Hit a rough 1-6 skid. And then of course tonight. So again, all totaled: 6-7.

(Can you tell I tend to get a little stat-obessed at times?)

PRE-GAME
- Pitching match-up: Kody Young (Sweets) v. Ty Druffel (Pirates)
- Druffel has pitched in 4 games and started 2 for the Pirates. He has a 6.46 ERA...that's 11 ER in 15.1 IP. Nothing special in the K/BB ratio...7 K & 6 BB.
- Heads up Sweets hitters: He leads the team in hit-by-pitches with 5 (for comparison, Walla Walla's Brian Biagi leads the league 7).
- Young is coming off a very nice game in Kitsap. He went 7 IP, 3 ER, 6 K, and 1 BB.
- His ERA is 3.95. He's one of only three Sweets pitchers who've tossed more than 10 IP to have an ERA under 4.00 (Ryan Richardson and Chris Kerns are the other two).

Fun facts learned at Borleske yesterday.

- Kevin Kuntz' father is Rusty Kuntz, the first base coach for the Royals. That's not the fun fact. I already new that. What I didn't know was Rusty's first MLB coaching job was first base coach for the Mariners. In addition to coaching first base, he coaches base running and the outfielders. Now, this was right around the time Ken Griffey Jr. was making his way up. So connect the dots...Kevin's father was Ken Griffey Jr.'s first big league outfield coach. And here's the kicker: the Kuntz family used to have pictures of Griffey holding Kevin as a baby.

- Ed Cheff retiring at L-C State affects a couple of the Sweets. Brian Biagi, Andy Matthews, Curtis Dupart, and Zach Clanton have all played under Cheff. When asked on a scale of 1-10 how upset he was when he found out Cheff had retired, Clanton said, "An 11." Clanton got the news via text message from an assistant coach of a former summer ball team. He called his Dad to check the Internet to see if it was true. Keep in mind, this was during the Wednesday Bellingham game right before he came in and gave up the walk-off 3-R home run.

- Assistant Kentucky baseball coach and recruiting coordinator Brad Bohannon was at last night's game to watch Karsten Strieby. Karsten's older brother, Ryan, played one year at Kentucky in 2006 and was named the SEC Player of the Year. That's obviously how Kentucky knows about Karsten, but Bohannon told me if Karsten gets a scholarship it's going to be entirely on his own merits and abilities- nothing to do with his brother. Karsten went 2-5 with 2 K and one error. It was Bohannon's first time watching Karsten in person. Hope the big first baseman made a decent impression - Bohannon already headed out of town to scout more players here in the Northwest.

7/2 - Walla Walla v. Moses Lake:

POST-GAME
3-2 loss in 10 innings
- The big problems tonight: hitting with runners in scoring position. Walla Walla goes 2-14.
- Sweets leaves 11 runners on base.
- After starting the season 2-0 in extra innings, Walla Walla has lost three straight (5-4 in 10 at. Kitsap, 7-6 in 13 at Kitsap, and this one).
- Despite getting the loss, Jacob Overbay (Nevada-Reno) had a pretty good game in relief. He went 5.2, 3 H, 1 ER. The righty dropped his ERA from 9.00 to 6.14.
- Walla Walla hitters struck out 6 times tonight. Not a great number...but that's actually well under their WCL-worst 8.5 per/game.
- Christian Ramirez (UC Irvine) had the best night at the plate: 3-5, 1 RBI.

PRE-GAME
- Pitching match-up: Sweets - Brian Biagi (L-C State) v. Pirates - Jordan Whitman (Cal-Poly Pomona)
- Biagi is tied for second-most IP for the Sweets with Ryan Richardson - both have 21.1.
- He has a 4.64 ERA. BUT if you take out the bad 8th inning he had in Kelowna - where he gave up 5 ER in a third of an inning - Biagi's ERA drops to 2.14.
- Whitman is 0-1 in 11.2 IP for the Pirates. His ERA is 4.63 and has a WHIP of 1.37.
- Based on the numbers, he's been a pitch-to-contact kind of guy so far this season. Just 2 K and 2 BB.

- Learned this fun fact on the bus ride home: Matt Hart plays with Scott Boras' son, Shane, at USC. And Christian Ramirez (UC Irvine) played with him last summer on the Califonia Mariners - a college summer ball team. Obviously, Scott Boras' public perception isn't the best. But appearently he's a pretty cool guy in person. Said Hart, "He's just the man." Both Hart and Ramirez said he's always at his son's game, and he's always got the video camera out

- On a similar note, Orel Hershiser's son, Jordan is also on USC. Hart said he has the best stuff of anyone on the staff, and Orel has even admitted Jordan is better than he was at that age. Jordan's problem: command. Hart added that if Jordan ever puts it all together, he's a first round draft pick without question.

6/30 - Walla Walla at Bellingham:

POST-GAME
- Zachary Clanton (L-C State) gives up a 3-R walk-off home run and the Sweets lose 5-2 at Bellingham.
- Walla Walla was up 2-0 going into the bottom of the 9th.
- The Sweets scored both of their hits without an RBI. Karsten Strieby (Arizona Western) grounded into a double-play with the bases loaded for the first run. And Christian Ramirez (UC Irvine) scored on a passed ball for the second.
- Starter Ryan Richardson (Walla Walla CC) had a great game. Went 8.1 IP, 1 R, 0 BB, and 1 K. He threw first-pitch strikes to 22 of 28 batters.
- Walla Walla finishes the road trip 1-8.
- The Sweets don't committ an error for the second straight game. Oddly enough, in the four games Walla Walla has not committed an error, its only won one of them.

6/29 - Walla Walla at Bellingham:

POST-GAME
- In a lightning-quick game - just 2:05 - the Sweets lose 5-2.
- Bells starter Cordell Greene shut down Walla Walla - goes 8 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 6 K, and always the most important number for pitchers: 0 BB. He was extremely efficient. 75% of his pitchers were strikes.
- Sweets starter AJ Burke did a pretty nice job for Walla Walla as well - tosses 6 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 2 K, 2 BB.
-
For just the third time all year, the Sweets don't committ an error.

6/28 - Walla Walla at Bellingham

POST-GAME NOTES
- Walla Walla snaps a 8-game losing streak.
- Matt Hart (USC) has the big night: 3-4, 3 RBI, 2 2B, and a run scored.
- It's just the second time all year the Sweets have held a time to under 5 runs (6/9 2-0 W v. Wenatchee the other).
- Kevin Kuntz and Denver Chavez each steal one base. The significance? It's the first time Walla Walla has more than one player steal a base in a game.
